Best test is, if someone reports the problem again is get them to:
1) Backup the settings folder (users\username\AppData\Roaming\calibre) 2) Do a complete uninstall and clean-up 3) Re-install and then copy settings back over |

@macnab69 - for the benefit of others could you expand on what steps you think should be taken in clean-up. Better that it comes straight from the man who's just done it than someone like me.
TPTB might want to include your solution in the calibre FAQ. BR |

I'd already installed the portable version and copied the contents of users\username\AppData\Roaming\calibre to Calibre Portable\Calibre Settings. I then had my library as well as the portable version's (empty) Calibre Library available. So I used it to copy my library to Calibre Library, seeing as the portable version uses it by default. Then I was more or less happy.
I then installed the 32bit version, in Program Files (x86), and it worked. Then I decided to see if a clean install of the 64bit version would work. I had it installed in a folder called PROGS, not in Program Files. I didn't see calibre in the list in Revo. Didn't think of CCleaner (I don't know if it does a deep clean like Revo does?) Nor did I think of using Windows' uninstaller. So I just deleted the Calibre 2 folder in PROGS. (Naughty, I know.) Then I re-installed the 64bit version, but I forgot to change the folder to PROGS, and it installed in Program Files. And it worked. Then I used Revo to uninstall the 32bit version. But at the deep clean stage it wanted to delete the 64bit version's folder structure and registry entries, because of the order of install, so I skipped those steps. Thinking about it, what fixed the problem? Deleting the contents of Calibre 2 and re-installing, or switching to Program Files instead of PROGS? Later today I'll remove calibre and re-install to PROGS and test. Then I'll report back, and see if we can get a more definitive answer. Just not able to restart the PC at the moment. As a side note, it might be "safe" to run 32bit and 64bit in parallel, but then uninstalling one of them seems to be a bit risky, depending on the order of install and which one you want to uninstall. |

They are in separate folders by default You can uninstall either.
The only issue is, manual associations to ebook-viewer: change before uninstall |

@macnab69 - good man - yer blood's worth bottling mate.
I'm also 'uneasy' about using Revo in a dual environment, you were savvy enough to to say 'No' when it went into its deep clean phase. I've met people who use it, who probably shouldn't. And I know they never learnt to say 'No', because I met them whilst getting rid of crud that Open Candy, Bunddle etc put on their systems when they clicked 'Yes', One of them had 3 AV''s running!! I looked up Revo. Full 64bit handling is a feature of the Pro version. Explains why it got confused uninstalling the 32bit version.
I also wouldn't recommend Revo to the uninitiated - you have to at least know the difference between the registry and folders. Did my backups, including my boot disk. Used Windows to uninstall the 64bit version. Didn't delete the settings folder. Portable version still worked, including Viewer. Re-installed 64bit version in PROGS, rather than Program Files. Works, including Viewer. Checked Temp folder - it is only shared with Owner, so not a Windows sharing problem. I can only assume that something went wrong with a file in the install folder. So, if the problem occurs. 1) Uninstall with Windows. This does not affect the settings. 2) Re-install. In the long run, this is all I did. File associations don't matter as the installation goes back into the same folder. On a lighter note, regarding people who say "Yes" to everything. A friend of my father's bought a hi-fi near the top end of the range. He believed in getting full value for his money, so he turned every knob and selected every switch on the front panel. Treble turned full up, bass turned full up, treble-cut on, mono on. Then he played albums of steam-trains going past. Didn't sound too god. |
