That might be bending the "no zombies or vampires" request. But it's definitely an interesting book. And I prefer the Charlton Heston version.

Maybe not quite the right theme, but Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl was a good read for me in the dystopian vein. More along the line of corporations running amuck with the environment. His short story collection Pump Six and Other Stories from which the short story that The Windup Girl is based on comes from was also a good read.

No one has mentioned The Road by Cormac McCarthy? I haven't even read it, and it was the first book I thought of. I see it has cannibals in it, but I think they are more of the "real" kind, than the "zombie" kind?
I don't know if you are open to or interested in YA at all, but I really liked "Life As We Knew It" by Susan Pfeffer. Apocalypse due to an asteroid hitting the moon and changing its orbit (seems like most fictional apocalypses are due to man's actions). Starvation ensues. eP |

Frank Herbert's _The White Plague_.
Steven Boyett's _Ariel_ and _Elegy Beach_ (I think they have everything but zombies and vampires though). The Borderlands, Bordertown and other books which it inspired. Stephen Vincent Benét's 1937 story ``By the Waters of Babylon'' Dean Ing's Single Combat and two other books make for a mildly amusing trilogy if one's interests run that direction. Harlan Ellison's short story ``I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream'' H. Beam Piper's ``Genesis'' looks at this from a very different angle. Ursule Le Guin's _Always Coming Home_ takes place a long while after an apocalypse Vernor Vinge's ``Longshot'' (available in _True Names and Other Dangers_) looks at how humanity might face an apocalypse Ben Bova's _Exiles Trilogy_ as well. |

The remainder I have read and agree they are quite recommendable. Thankfully it's a huge improvement on the movie, which I unfortunately saw first.... |

Quite. That brings to mind a book I am very, very glad I read before I saw the movie and which does have two (of its six) sections that are dystopia/post-apocalypse, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.
I don't want to discourage anyone from seeing the movie but, if you do, please read the book at least once. Considering the challenging source material, they did a fairly good job, it just didn't do the book justice. |

The Nasa Trilogy by Stephen Baxter. At least Moonseed. I quite enjoyed that one.
And Flood, Ark, by the same one. |

>Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell<
I'm 2/3 through this right now! I am enjoying it very much! And also appreciating the X-Ray feature on my Kindle, since there are so characters to keep track of. eP |

_Mortality Bridge_ sounds interesting --- but I burned out on that sort of thing w/ Niven's _Inferno_ The Dean Ing novels are survivalist stuff --- juvenile in a pejorative sense, entertaining, but not decent --- same vein as Daniel de la Cruz's Texas trilogy.
