Fantastical uses the built-in calendar system so it will sync in the same manner as Apple's app. It is a lot nicer than the Apple app if you use multiple calendars. Colour coded dots are a lot easier to glance at.

Not really. I suggest you take the time to look into other solutions before dismissing them out of hand. If anything, you have it backwards: third-party services are known for being much more reliable than Apple's own services, which are notoriously flaky.

Fantastical has native apps for all iDevices and OS X, which sync either via Google Calendar, iCloud, or any other CalDav protocol.

Simplenote syncs across iOS devices and to an OS X app called Notational Velocity. I've been using it for 3 years and it has never once failed.

I'm not going to pay $20 for the OS X app and another $5 for the iOS app that only shows stupid dots for appointments. I like the text to be there so I can see at a glance what the appointments are without having to touch the screen and drill through the UI to find out. I'll stick with the Apple apps as I know they integrate well and sync well.

Huh? You can see the text for every calendar entry in Fantastical on the main screen as soon as you launch it. You can, in fact, see more text than when using the default Calendar app.

Don't use them if you don't want, but don't make stuff up.

Here is a prime example of how slow iOS 7 is on my iPad 3. If I go into settings to change the background screen and chose an image from one of my Photos albums, it takes several seconds to display the image. You can move and scale the image to better fit the screen, so trying to drag the image nothing happens for about 10 seconds, then suddenly the image moves. Ten freaking seconds to drag the image 1/2 inch! I also notice delays of up to 10 seconds when pressing buttons/icons in Photos when trying to select an image to use as the background. So pressing the square box with arrow in lower right of Photos app takes 3 seconds to display the popup control options. Then pressing the Use as Wallpaper button/icon and it takes 10-12 seconds to display the image. I already discussed slow dragging. Pressing the Set Both item takes 3 seconds to return to album. Pressing the Home button can take up to 10 seconds to return to the Home screen, though it often closes the app more quickly.

Have not been able to update my iPad so far using Software Update. First it said 'unable to connect to service' or something like that. Then it said I didn't have enough free space (only have 16GB. After making some more room, now it says 'Your software is up to date', which is not true. I tried restart, but still not able to update. Maybe I could try using iTunes but I've never seen any reason to connect to iTunes and this is not reason enough to start doing so. So I'll wait, I assume it will allow update before too long.

I'm looking forward to it myself. I was finding the UI a little tired and in need of a facelift. The quick access to certain settings is something I've wanted for a long time. Unfortunately my iPod Touch did not make the cut, but it already seems to struggle with iOS6 and the battery seems to be losing capacity.

First impression. So far I really like the look and speed of the update on my iPhone 5, although I haven't had time to really start using it yet.

Why can't Apple ever get it together? Apple Software Update said I had iTunes 11.1 and iCloud 3.0 updates so I told it to do them. An hour into downloading iTunes and it says the signature doesn't match. So I go to the iTunes home page and it's not even there yet. Meanwhile, iCloud updates and it says it supports syncing bookmarks with Firefox and Chrome. That's great since I use Firefox... so I go to set that up and... you need an add-on for Firefox which isn't available yet!

So back to iTunes... after refreshing the page for 20 minutes, 11.1 finally shows up. I get that going... again.

Now, while I'm waiting for all those downloads, I still had about 30 apps to update on my iPad and iPhone (and more added every time I look it seems). I didn't finish updating them all, but now when I go to the app store on my devices, it shows all apps being up to date. No, they're not. The updates show if I go through purchased app, but not in the update list.

I want to have all apps updates and do a backup before updating to iOS 7. I guess I will come back to this mess later.

iTunes 11.1 finally installed... opens with a big iTunes Radio screen.

iTunes is acting wonkier today than usual. I'm unable to download 11.1 via the Mac OS X App Store. It originally started to download but then spit out an error and stopped. I've tried numerous times to get it to download but I keep getting error 1102.102, or something similar. Just a little while ago my iPhone App Store icon indicated I had 5 updates available, but when I went into the App Store it showed there were none!

@tomsen, I think you have to install the 11.1 update to iTunes if you want to use it to update your iPad. 11.0 is not iOS 7 compatible. My iPad is the 16GB model so I'm not sure why your iPad refused to update with 16GB available, assuming you meant you had that much available. I guess you could have meant you have a 16GB model.

Anyone else finding the App Store on your iDevice kind of wonky after the iOS 7 update? On my iPad when I select Apps to look at the popup window shows no Details. It does show info under Reviews and Related, but not under Details.

EDIT: Never mind...it is working now. I guess the App Store servers are just overwhelmed today!

I finally got iTunes 11.1 to install successfully on my Mac. The good news is that for the first time with this Mac iTunes will now sync via WiFi with my iPad 3. That would never work before, but it was probably related to the fact that the iPad had originally been synced on another computer that has since died. My iPhone has always used my Mac to sync with iTunes and it always synced well over WiFi. Anyway, as soon as 11.1 installed I opened it and it immediately found both my iPhone and my iPad and went through a backup and sync of the iPad. The iPad is running iOS 7.0 and the iPhone is running iOS 6.1.4.

Wifi sync has been very unreliable for me, so I disabled it for both devices and will try reenabling after the update.

Now my iPad has already started downloading iOS 7, without me even telling it to. My iPhone still says no update available.

Even though WiFi sync worked with my iPhone 5, I would often have to turn the iPhone screen on just to get it to be recognized, and sometimes turn it on and off a few times to get it to work. So it was wonky for sure.

I just checked on my iPhone 5 and it too says no updates available and indicates v. 6.1.4. Probably just Apple's servers being way overloaded. I had to tell my iPad to update, so I hope that is true for the iPhone as well because I don't won't to update it yet, if at all.

Yeah, I always had to jump through hoops to get it to work so eventually I just said forget it and resorted to tethered syncing once a month or so. Once in an while my iPad would sync OTA, but my iPhone never did.

Apparently, it starts downloading without prompting as soon as you connect to power. I had plugged my iPad in earlier to back up. My iPhone started updating as soon as I connected it to do a backup through iTunes. Disconnecting pauses it. But if you plan to charge overnight, you might get an unwanted surprise in the morning! (On my connection it might not even finish by morning. ;-P )

I leave my iPad plugged into the charger 24/7 and the WiFi is always on. I had to make it install the 7 update this morning, but it was soon after they made it available so it most likely would have downloaded it automatically. I always plug my iPhone in overnight to charge it and leave the WiFi on. I think it is supposed to ask before installing an update even if it downloads it automatically. I sure hope so. I wonder if there is a way to stop automatic downloads without disconnecting the charger and/or turning off WiFi?
