As far as I am aware we don't have trade in in the UK, which is a pity and it might be easier than trying to sell on ebay.

The easiest way to sell used eBook readers is here on the MR Flea Market. No eBay fees! I've bought and sold several items there in the past. If you have the time, I suggest trying this before listing on eBay. While Amazon's trade-in program looks good for PW1 owners, I noticed the Touch and K4s are valued really low at $22 to $27 trade-ins. You can probably get more than that in the Flea Market or on eBay.

Sending the KPW to the US from the Netherlands would likely cost me €30, so trading it in is not useful, if it is possible at all.

I wonder why US people can send packages to me for $5, but if *I* need to send a package (only needed to twice), it costs $40.

Thanks for the sugestion, it would be a PW1 I'd be selling, the drawback is I'd want a resonable price for it before I buy a PW2, but I am loathe to sell it without seeing a PW2 first.

When I send even tiny packages to Germany, I still have to pay at least $12, but yeah, they do cost more coming to the US from Germany.

I hear you! I might sell my Touch if I decide to keep the PW2, but I'm still rather skeptical that the PW2 has corrected the screen issues. So I'm in the same boat. Although in my case I don't expect to get much for my Touch since it is now 2 generations older than the PW2 and is without a lit screen.

Maybe it even has something to do where you live in the US, or with the service you use. I don't know. I've more often than not received packages from eBay or other sites that had a shipment value of somehwere around $5.

That's what I do also, I have already given away 7 kindles, I decided I was gonna keep this one for myself as a backup since there is no one who wants one. But for this I may trade in and just use the money to get more books, especially since my Fire is already my backup device.

I know that shipping USA to Europe is cost prohibitive if using FedEx or UPS, and much better if we use the US Postal Service. I'm amazed that FedEx or UPS often want 2 to 3 times more than US Postal Service.

I've made the exact opposite experience. The cheapest option to send a Kindle to Europe from the US cost around $25 using USPS. The other way around it costs 3,45 € when sent as a "large letter" (which is perfectly ok for a Kindle*). As a package, it'd cost around 16 € to the US.

All prices for Germany, using either Deutsche Post or DHL.

(*) I've done that, but only within the EU. Not sure about how customs would react to it when sent to the US.

Here's the update!
I created the trade and printed the packing slip and shipping label on the 8th, shipped it out the next morning and they received my Kindle on the 11th. I just got the email today, the 13th, that they accepted the trade and credited my account with $122. I'm pretty shocked it went through!
I still had the original box, plastic, etc. and my Paperwhite was in perfect condition.
I'm glad I did this. Thank you!

I'm really shocked too. Today on the Amazon USA site they list the Paperwhite trade-in values from $39 to $105. That is a totally absurd range considering there is little difference other than a 3G radio in some units and some or SO units. Their pricing makes no sense to me. I briefly considered trading in my Touch, but they only offer $26 for it.

Wow, that's great! Thanks for the update! Makes me want to give it a go too now. I'll have to wait until I see the PW2 though and then I'm thinking I will get less for it. I guess I'll see.

It's the same with their general pricing - one day an item is 40.00, next day it can be as much as 80.00! The fluctuations in pricing for items I leave in my cart from day to day can vary wildly. I find it pretty annoying when I buy something from them, only to see the price drop a lot the next day. They used to credit you the difference if it was within 30 days, but they no longer do that.
