When Amazon's CD match came out, I took a look and was surprised to find CDs I couldn't remember buying, from artists I had never heard of. It turns out I had bought those as gifts for my nieces and nephews and forgot about them. I still haven't gotten around to listening to them!

One thing I love about the CD match program: when I see a used CD I want for cheap, I can buy it risk-free. If it has scratches, no worries because I already have a clean digital version. I can see using the book match program the same way: I could buy a used book with no fear about the condition of it. But since the ebook version might not be free, I would have to factor in that cost.

I like the idea but all the paper books I've bought in the last 3-4years have been because an ebook wasn't available. So the chances of there being any books that:

- I bought through Amazon
- have an ebook version
- the publisher has agreed to include in the program

seems small. (And that's if/when they extend this to the UK).

Still I approve the principle.

I figure most of us will be in that situation.

I like this. I can definitely see ordering a hardcover if it comes with a free or 99cent ebook version (probably wouldnt for the pricier ones). I still like physical books now and then.

True but if they do become available at some point in time you might be able to get them at a reduced rate.

This is a good move! However, I doubt I will eligible to one of those cheap or free ebooks. If other sellers and more publishers could follow this trend that would be awesome

Not sure how many books this will work out to for me, but I'm pretty happy about this. Their equivalent music program (free mp3s for albums purchased through Amazon) has worked out very nicely so far.

I didn't know that autorip applied to used CDs. That's pretty strange since in the used market the artist/publishers don't get any money.

Now that's something I wholeheartedly agree with, and it'll increase publisher's revenue wrt readers like me, since I tend to award myself the right to a darknet ebook if I own the pbook. Go Amazon!

That's a smart move. If this works well this will destroy a lot of business models. But it's a brilliant idea for customers and for publishers, too.

I'm debating whether or not I should enroll mine. I guess my problem is that I almost never sell print copies, and honestly, I make more off of each ebook sale, so I don't really promote print.

Now is the best time to start promoting print
Worst case: nothing changes...
Best case: your books gain visibility on bookshelves and in public...

I didn't think the digital mp3 program applied to used CDs only new ones that are offered as digital.
