There's one total "gift card amount" stored in your Amazon account. So if I post a new $50 gift card with an outstanding balance of $3.63, then my total jumps to $53.63. Amazon doesn't keep them separate once they are redeemed and posted to the account.

What's a credit card statement?

I just look online to make sure balances jive and payments post. I guess I don't use the card enough to even look at individual line items. I just know about what the outstanding balance should be at any given point. If there's no surprises there, I don't dig any deeper.

I wonder if it perhaps depends on the bank that's processing the card? As I say, when I buy books (using my "amazon.co.uk" Bank of America MasterCard) it's always a separate transaction per book.

I keep getting one statement for multiple purchases made within a few minutes of each other. Maybe it's another difference between the US and UK stores?

I have noticed too that when I make several ebook purchases fairly close together they show up as one debit from my gift card balance not individually. I have a US account. I think it's a geo thing but could be wrong. I remember this discussion happening before on here.

I've always used a gift card balance when I'm purchasing more than one ebook at a time, and they've always shown up as individual items. The only difference is that they used to send you an email for every single book, now when you buy a few at the one time, they group them together in a single email.

I've also noticed that if I buy several books at the same time from Amazon that when I go to my bank and look at my statement they tend to show as a single debit from my account. I think part of it might be the software that the banks use as well. No doubt it's easier for them to just have one debit from the same source than for the system to deduct for each and every book separately.

I go online every few days or so to check my bank balance and update a spreadsheet that I keep on my local machine accordingly. I find it's a good way to make sure that I don't overspend by accident especially as I am on a limited budget and only get more money in once a month.

At least part of it must be to do with transaction fees for Amazon... If it's a small fixed charge plus a percentage (or just a small fixed charge) per transaction, they'll want to do the fewest possible transactions to keep their margins as high as practicably possible (but without letting Harry out of their sights for an instant )

I belatedly realized the utility of the gift-card trick. Soon after going to town on a newly-released 153-book Japanese fantasy series, I got a call from the credit card company saying WTF?
