Not necessarily. Some Kindle eBooks in my public library must be downloaded to my computer and then side-loaded. I prefer this as it keeps Amazon.com out of the loop (and lets me keep the wireless radio off on my Kindle).

Penguin books must be side-loaded, but AFAIK they're still downloaded from the Amazon server as Amazon is the one who applies the DRM.

When you go to download a book for Kindle from the public library - via Overdrive through your computer's web browser - the download button will take you to an Amazon page, where you need to choose the device to which you wish to download the ebook (wirelessly, except for Penguin). Only after this step will the book show up in the Kindle archive. Here's what the download page on Amazon looks like (click on the pic to see a larger image): ![]() The book won't show up in the Kindle's archive or under Manage Your Kindle until I click the yellow Get LIbrary Book button on the right. I get the same message; but once it hits Amazon, it's in the cloud. All I have to do is turn on wifi and fetch it. Just tried it again with my Kindle 3. When the prompt to open or save the book pops up, just cancel it. Then go to the cloud and download it over wifi.

![]() I didn't cancel in time. Now I have a full price credit and every book I find is cheaper as a Whispersync package (ebook + audio) via Amazon. I should still have a little over a week to find something creditworthy. |

I recently downgraded my membership from the monthly credits to the light membership, due to the fact 90% of the books I was purchasing was at the lower whispersync price. There are a few that are not whispersync but I am going to save those purchases for a sale or later when I really want it. The other 10% is at the membership price which is more expensive but it is within the $15-20 range I am willing to pay.
And I will admit that I purchase A LOT of of my overdrive books at the whispersync price, there are some I get in overdrive just so I can get the audible at the lower price. |

The key thing to remember about this offer is that qualifying purchases must have a regular price of $14.95 or more. That means that free, reduced price, and sale titles qualify if they normally sell at $14.95 or more. I have one purchase under my belt because I got the free Whispersync title of the month - Little Women. I plan to get the other three by purchasing $0.99 Whispersync classics. There are four other free Whispersync titles that qualify, but I already have them. |

Most of the books I buy with credits are not part of the whispersync program OR a family member does not want to read it. It all depends on what you want and each person is so individualized. I use the program to get audiobooks cheap - things that my Mom or sisters also want to read (they don't use audiobooks usually). It makes no sense for me to buy the ebook for Terry Brooks latest to get the audiobook cheap when none of them want to read the ebook (they aren't Shannara fans) and I only want the audiobook because reading is hard for me.
<<If you check out the Whispersync ebook from the library, Amazon thinks you own it and will let you buy the audiobook at the reduced price. >> Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try that! |
