Oh, don't remind me what I paid for the first one. Groans. I did get a bit of money back when signing up for the amazon visa at the time. Of course it has been that visa card that has basically bought me the other kindles since then with the points.

I thought when I got the K3 for $289 what a bargain it was compared to the K1. Now you can buy a kindle for $69

I will always have a soft spot for my K1. It was it, that got me back to reading after I had to dial it back almost completely. It brought back the joy of reading for me. Combination of the cool factor and not getting cramps in my hands and being able to read the fonts.
It also had the coolest packaging of all the kindles. I still have the box it came in pristine in the closet. It looked like a big book. It was just such a joy to open it.

I'd have to go along with sneakyspider and some of the others. I bought mine more as a personal museum item than an eReader. Although it seems to be working perfectly, it seems so foreign (and slow) that I don't think I'd ever really USE it. The cover and the display also irritate me, but... that's history.

You've come a long way, baby.

I have one. Got it about a year ago, someone was selling it for about $65 on a popular Hungarian ebay clone.

I always wanted one: I was always fascinated with the first Kindle and I am one of the few people who actually loves its design.

At that time I sold my 4th K3 replacement I got from Amazon (three died on me in a year... fragile thing), and was waiting for my Paperwhite preorder. I started using the K1 for reading after receiving it.

Then my PW arrived, sold it a week later due to the screen stuff. I've been using the K1 ever since. The battery is pretty weak but as long as I charge it every other day it's okay. I was also able to register it on Amazon with CS (I live in Sweden now, no Sprint CDMA here so I couldn't register it).

It's one of my few gadgets I'll hold on for a long, long time.

If you plan on keeping it, why not get a replacement battery? It's not like it's hard to replace like any of the newer designs from K3 up. Just wondering.

Been thinking about that for a while now, but it's surprisingly expensive. ($17-18 plus shipping from the US to Sweden which is not cheap...)

My K1 is living at my friend's house now, as she has sometimes borrowed books from me. She hasn't done that in a long time, so I am thinking of trading it in to Amazon for $9 or something like that. If I upgrade to the PW2, I am debating whether to keep my K3 as a back-up or trade that in as well. I guess it depends on whether I will be loaning out books.
