You're right to wait. If past years are anything to go by Amazon should be revealing a new model soon. Kobo have just done so and Sony should be telling us some real info on their T3 soon.

And now, seriously: In the past, when Amazon had been developing new models similar to existing ones, "traces" of it already showed up in the firmwares for the prior models. So, weeks before the PW was released, we already knew that it would have a light, and that its resolution would be 1024x758 (NOT 1024x768!). (I can't find anything better than this right now, but rest assured that it was known... well before they officially presented the PW and raised the curtain).

So unless they have developed something entirely new, based on entirely different hardware and with a completely new software*... there won't be a new Kindle anytime soon.

As simple as that.

(*) I'm not ruling out the possibility. I just find it veeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrryyyyy improbable. But if they really did, then well - I was wrong, and I can live with it. But in that case, I'd bet that there would have been a huge announcement for an upcoming press conference.

Couple of interesting articles when I googled the PW

Here’s an interesting twist. As of this morning, Amazon is no longer selling the base Kindle Paperwhite, the cheapest model that comes with Special Offers that normally sells for $119.

The $139 Wi-Fi Paperwhite without Special Offers is still available, as are both 3G Paperwhites. But what happened to the other one?

It might very well just be a simple supply issue, or a glitch. It could reappear later today. Who knows… Or maybe Amazon doesn’t care to replenish stock because they have a new model ready to take its place.

One thing to note is that there currently isn’t anything saying that the $119 Kindle Paperwhite will be back in stock soon; usually Amazon has a note saying when an item will be available again. But not this time. The product page instead directs to marketplace sellers where you can only buy it used.

Another interesting detail is that the $119 Kindle Paperwhite has been removed from the Kindle banner at the top of Kindle device pages. It now lists the $139 Kindle instead.

Usually Amazon releases a new Kindle before they stop selling the older ones so this is a bit of a head-scratcher. And since Amazon hasn’t even scheduled a press event yet, a new model likely won’t be available until the second week of September at the earliest.

Kobo has scheduled an event for tomorrow where they will likely announce a new Kobo Glo ebook reader, and a tablet perhaps.

It probably won’t be long now before Amazon does the same. Disappearing Kindles are a good sign that a new model is about to be released.

Are you sure that Kobo have "scheduled an event for tomorrow"? They announced some new devices only a few days ago. It seems a little soon to hold another such event.

I definitely think a new model is coming soon. I know the PaperWhite had a big press conference because it was "all new technology" and a big deal. I don't remember the Kindle 3 having that much fanfare since it was a relatively minor update over the Kindle 2. I have a feeling the new Kindle won't be much more than a PaperWhite with some improved lighting/resolution/page refresh rate and maybe a slightly better battery. I can definitely see Amazon just announcing it one day on their webpage instead of a big conference for a minor upgrade. All the Fire tablets seem to be just spec upgrades too this round.

I don't think they will make a lot of noise, but I think one morning the new device will just be there on their front page.

...Seriously, how much of that device is new ? The processor is a bit faster and the screen is slightly different. Pretty much what happened to the K4 last year, and hardly a breakthrough.

That said: yep, sure, I was wrong with my "bold" statement. I already said that I could live with it.

So now, my prediction is that for at least 2 or 3 years, Amazon will be launching new Kindles in September or October, every year.

If there are marginal technological advances, it will just be done silently, but if they think they have "the next big thing", there'll be a huge press announcement beforehand.

I agree with all of that. It doesn't look like a big enough improvement for me to upgrade, particularly not with a three year warranty on this one.

When you put it like that that's the most telling thing about the new PW2. I'm going to wait until I can see it in person before I buy one (or not)
