after booting up, enter settings -> device information and do a factory reset set the kobo up, get the latest firmware for mark3/old-touch or whatever version you want from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 and put it into the .kobo (dont overlook the dot) folder on the kobo and disconnect it. it should start updating. almost just the same as you did before, when updating to 2.8.1, no? or did the 2.8.1 update came via the kobo-software? well, then it SHOULD be the correct one for you. maybe kobo messed something up, dont know Last edited by Cyphox; 09-08-2013 at 01:27 PM. |

The problem is, if I update it to 2.4.1 (I think the previous version), it requires a connection to the desktop. I've looked at the workaround, but I don't have the program to go in and alter the .sqlite database. I could get it, but I'm not exactly sure how to change it. It would be so much easier if Kobo asked which firmware you wanted to install, or even better, didn't require you to attach to a desktop. |

so you have no wifi and no kobo desktop software. cant you skip the setup? in older firmware versions there was an option to do so.
well... you sure must have internet, otherwise you couldn't post here. so from what device are you posting? no pc or laptop i guess, otherwise you could just download the kobo-software, could you not? also, if there's no laptop or pc to access right now, you cant copy anything to your kobo's internal memory. no chance to update firmware without access to a computer. so i guess you have to borrow your husbands laptop again and install the kobo-software on it. or do a manual update as i explained in post #17. your husbands laptop can access internet, can it not? mhh? everything i so confusing, i know. im beginning the get confused by myself Last edited by Cyphox; 09-08-2013 at 01:53 PM. |

I have wifi and internet, however, if I attach the kobo to the computer, it automatically pushes the latest firmware onto my Kobo, no questions asked. It then prompts me to enter my account info in order to complete the set up. I had a problem recently where I couldn't get past the log in screen (Kobo's problem, not mine), and it would not let me use the Kobo until I set it up with my user account. It continually prompted me to connect either by desktop or by wifi, but would not let me pas that screen until I did. As I could not get it to accept my username and password (both of which were correct), I couldn't access any books. I could not access the reader other than to tell it how I was going to connect.
So, if I get the firmware version 2.4.X and overlay it onto my reader, it will still prompt me to connect via wifi or desktop, again pushing the latest version of firmware onto my reader without my consent. And then I'm back to where I started. |

Instructions have been posted in the past on how to circumvent the automatic update during setup via Kobo Desktop,

so updating via kobo-desktop works, but it automatically updates to 2.8.1, which is causing the sdcard-problem? or does it download the previous version, which is 2.6.1 btw, have you checked that?
again, how did you initially install 2.8.1? automatically via kobo or by hand? pretty important question can you post your serial number (device information), so we can see what version of the touch you have? pretty weird, if you're getting 2.8.1 via kobo-software it should be a c-model and should work just fine. on the other side, if its an A or B model, its no wonder it has problems with 2.8.1 |

Instructions have been posted, at least I found the one in the Linux thread, but they are difficult and require a separate program to edit the .sqlite file. That's not easy for someone as low tech as myself.
I don't have 2.8.1, I have 2.5.2. I *thought* I had 2.8.1, but that was a mistake on my part - I didn't know what I had before I restored it back to factory settings, I assumed it was 2.8.1 as that was the last firmware nu,ber listed on the top of this forum. I was wrong. I installed the firmware by connecting it to my laptop and opening the Kobo program, which pushes the latest firmware onto the device. I have a N905 version of the Touch, no letter after the numbers. |

No... The instructionsd I refer to had NOTHING to do with modifying the DB; all tyhat was required was after the desktop had downloaded the new f/w to the device to remopve the files from the .kobo directory directly; the KoboRoot.tgz, manifest.md5sum and the entire .kobo/upgrades directory.
(Sigh; one knows you have done way too many upgrades when you can the names and cases of those files and directories right from memory). You actually could at the same time place the corresponding files from the desired f/w level on the device in their place. |

Peter, I may have to crawl through the internet and kiss you, just warning you. ![]() How would I do it? Restore factory settings (necessary for a downgrade), update to new firmware - signing in to account and getting validated - then taking all those new files and pasting over them from the .zip file of my firmware of choice (maybe 2.4.x)? IS IT THAT EASY?? If not, how do I get around having to sign into Kobo? |

Restore; then connect via Kobo Desktop; do the setup via Desktop but before the device cisconnects, drop those files I mentioned. Copy over the version you want!
Let me see if I can find a post from someone live davidfor that details it. Quote:

after it says you can eject it, but before you actually eject it of course.
when the kobo software says "installing update yaddayadda" its actually just copying the updatefiles to the kobo. the actual update starts when the kobo reboots/disconnects. |
