What do you think how many people buy books from the University Press of Kentucky on a regular basis?

I think they know that there is a very small demand for this, so they choose to give away some E-Books for free with this funny loyalty program. I have to admit seeing some of this pics on tumblr is quite funny.

That would require buy-in from the retailers, and I suspect it would be a lot harder and more expensive than the system they've come up with. It would also get them a lot less publicity.

Given that the PDF doesn't have DRM or any form of security, the simpler way to do that would be to take one picture to get the PDF, then email the PDF to everyone that wants it. But then, the same is true of any ebook that doesn't have DRM (and it's not much more difficult for books with DRM), but when Tor stopped using DRM, they didn't notice an increase in piracy. I'm sure what you describe will happen, but I'm not convinced it'll happen so much that it'll cause the publisher real problems.

Other than acquisitions librarians at major universities, my wild guess is no more than the number of people who will read this post.

Most university presses would love to break even.

They call this one a blockbuster, but, well, it's hardly Shades of Grey:
