Started reading this author last Autumn. Kind of astounded I had never come across him before as I'm a big fan of frontier fiction.

Not yet. Though I do have one loaded up on my Kindle Fire. I decided to start with "The Horsemen of the Plains" as the title appealed to me. It's among the collection of stand alone novels at the site.

This isn't worth much, but since you're not getting much input at all in terms of recommendations, I'll offer that my father was a big Altsheler fan and his favorites by far were the French and Indian War books.

I'm nearly done with The Hunters of the Hills. I've enjoyed it and it seemed a good place to start time wise. The listing of his novels are here:

I suppose one could read them based on publishing history, but since the frontier books interested me the most I started with the French and Indian War.

Is that novel a stand-alone?

He has a few short-story collections, too, so I may look at one of those as well.
