It turns out you need to edit the mobi with a mobi editor and add two things: ASIN code (product code from amazon) and the EBOK tag. That is it.

Thank you I did this. My books i recognized as ebok in kindle, I can write a review of the book, BUT when I mark a quote and I want to share it in facebook, Kindle tells me to buy the book or to redownload it again from the cloud.

well that seem fair- they are doing all the heavy lifting of getting your quote from kindle to facebook & they are the only legal source/seller of any such kindle format book, so why can't they ask you to get a legal copy.

you should be glad they are not zapping it from your Kindle IMHO.

or would you prefer they posted your quote & tagged it with "don is reading a pirated copy of this book"

Mobi was a format before Amazon purchased them and there is no evidence to suggest that the book is not legal.

er- excuse me- the book has been hacked as per instructions given in this thread, so that it now contains a ASIN -a unique per--book-serial number - issued only by Amazon, who have records of every copy sold

so ergo it is either a counterfeit of an amazon book or a pirated copy. That's why Kovid rightly will have nothing to do with auto-insertion of ASINs. I am pretty sure that a lawyer would tag such an action as " making a counterfeit"

ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number. Almost every product on our site has its own ASIN, a unique code we use to identify it.

amazon provide syncing, social media functions only for books containing their ASINs i.e. only for books bought from themselves. The ASIN is used as proof-of-purchase

but hey, just in case I'm wrong - lets ask the poster to declare how the kindle book came into his possession. The forum has rules about assisting piracy, which I have seem you strictly enforce in other threads, I am surprised you are letting this how-to hack discussion continue.
It's is stealing + flaunting that attracts the sort of attention that can close down a site, & wanting to post from Kindle to facebook is wanting to flaunt that you have the book on your Kindle

Editing an ebook you bought to customize it for a device you own in no way indicates it is a pirated book.

your call - clearly Amazon don't see it like that - I'll accept that the correct label here is counterfeit, not pirated, though -

I could buy an epub , format shift it, send it to Kindle ( in fact I have done all of that, repeatedly).

But once I insert an ASIN I am making that book appear to be a "bought from Amazon store" item & that to my mind is counterfeiting. To put it another way, by adding in the ASIN I am attempting to trick Amazon into providing the extra functions that are only offered for books actually bought from Amazon. I thought that was Kovid's rationale for refusing to implement such , but I could be wrong on that. If such hacking becomes widespread it will attract unwanted attention here, from Amazon - which is not in the communities' wider interest.

but as I say - your call - you are the moderator. This is all I intend to post in this thread.

Kovid's rationale is that it is not calibre's pace to insert an ASIN without the user knowing, just because the user has downloaded metadata from Amazon in the past.

WTF? If I'm buying a book outside amazon because I'm reading on a different language, why I can not share a quote to facebook and to be shown which book I''m reading? How you guess that I'm reading a pirate book?

I imagine Amazon's rationale runs something like this:

The cost of providing the 'post a quote from your kindle to social media' is factored into the price of the books that we sell. If the service was provided for books not purchased from us, then the people who buy books from us would be subsidising those that didn't.

Once one enters a walled garden, it's the gardener that sets the rules, it's not oneself - nor is it Rafferty. Life would be so much easier if we could pay a fee for the services we want, rather than living in the delusion of its a free world, where everything one wants comes for 'so-called' free.

2. if buy in other formats from other sellers & convert/send to Kindle ( strange choice), then be prepared to make your own facebook entires, manually.

3. Amazon owe you only as much help as you are paying them for
4. A good epub reader will post your quotes to facebook, from the paid-for epub format, no hassle. Kobo, Sony.. have that facility.
5. hacking your book to fake Amazon into thinking you bought it from them , then using their social media add-ons, is a dangerous game - you'll have only yourself to blame if they blacklist your device & ban you for breach of their T&C

There are thousands of free books in internet. I do not see what is the problem to convert them and read it on kindle with sharing quotes showing the name of the book. Probably you know that author rights are valid up to 75 years from his death. Since then the book is free for reading. I do not see any purpose to buy a book from amazon, while it''s free every where. And I do not see any reason why I need to buy only books from Amazon because only them can I share with names in facebok. Savvy?

There are other legal sellers of Kindle format books, not just Amazon.
