I'm sorry, but I must respectfully disagree with you. The fact that it's technically possible to install retail firmware on a demo Kindle does not mean that it's legal to do do.
I've had my say. I'll bow out of the discussion at this point. But I would strongly recommend that the OP asks Amazon whether reflashing a demo device falls within the terms of the Kindle licence agreement. |

You can't point to a single word from Amazon which supports your claim. In fact, if you look at their (rather obtuse) terms, they refer to ""Software" means the Reading Applications and all software on the Kindle (including any updates/upgrades to that software),... You may use the Software only on a Kindle..." No mention of "demo" Kindles being any different than any other Kindle.

wow. I didn't mean to stir things up, but so it goes.
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I don't have to worry about the moral dilemma this time; the price is already higher than my max. I think the way I would have justified it is that I already have a Paperwhite, and it's kinda unlikely that I would ever be using both of them at the same time. (shrugs) I already almost have too many to register. Aren't they limited to 6 devices? |

You can have as many Kindles registered as you wish. The limit of 6 that you're thinking of is the maximum number of devices that you can have a specific book loaded on at any given time.

Ah, but it was a good idea.
These things can become expensive to develop for, when you have to get intrusive into their internal workings without any vendor documentation. Following your lead, I went shopping for a "cheap" Kpw and found one at a very reasonable price. Its only problem was that someone had sat on the screen. ![]() The electronic version of a broken off, dog-eared page in your e-book. Now, with a soon-to-be-on-hand (broken) Kindle Paperwhite, I will be able to dig into its firmware with less concern about "bricking" it forever. **AND** If the (broken) Kindle Paperwhite survives my curiosity, I also priced a replacement screen. ![]() Last edited by knc1; 07-27-2013 at 11:33 AM. |

Same idea, completely different level of expertise.
![]() I went into it with doubts about being able to follow the lead of you guys with jailbreaking and usbnetwork and all the linux commands (before ixtab's link) and... (sigh) Best of luck to ya with your projects, and not just cause I expect to benefit from the fallout. ![]() Andy |

@knc1 might I please enquire as to where you found a replacement screen for a PW. I don't currently need one but it doesn't hurt to know where one can be located in case of trouble.

![]() http://www.mylcdtouchscreen.com/amaz...art_p1126.html Notes: * That site's server sometimes has only two speeds, slow and never. * The shipping costs on a single unit are hard to believe. * They do offer "drop shipping" and "Wholesale accounts" things of interest to someone in the "re-distributor" business. (I am inquiring about establishing a commercial wholesale account with them already.) * Big Note: I have not (yet) heard back from them about the programming of the waveform calibration ee-eprom on the devices. I don't (yet) know if they are shipped pre-programmed or factory blank. |

Lessee... $58.99 for the screen, at least $24.56 for shipping... that's $83.55, if you already have a broken PW. I think I'd have to go for the new Amazon one at $119... or better yet, Best Buy, so I can hold it in my hands and see exactly what I'm getting.
By the way, I think the site had a third speed you didn't notice... slower. ;-) Andy |

A bit of electronic shopping can probably find a "can't be registered" (blacklisted by Amazon) one cheaper. - - - - It might be the "great firewall of China" slowing done the site response - I never tried accessing it via a "China Proxy". |

Amazon is not marking them "Demo Only, Not for Resale" like they did with the earlier Kindle models. Maybe our efforts here to "Un-Demo" Kindle devices had something to do with that change. Last edited by knc1; 07-29-2013 at 03:18 PM. |
