Strange. I've checked and I'm definitely seeing personal docs on the "Cloud" tab of both my PW and Touch. Perhaps contact Kindle CS about it?

Please do let us know the outcome if you speak to Kindle CS about it. There is something odd going on here.

As I said earlier, archiving is enabled. Shari: Yes, I just went online and saw the documents in "Manage my Kindle" section. Harry: I have some suspicions of what's happening, and I'll run an experiment later tonight by deleting files from my Touch to see if they show up in the Cloud after. Still, I'm leaning towards the Wi-Fi version of the PW if I'm upgrading my Touch, rather than going 3g. Last edited by Haesslich; 07-19-2013 at 05:42 PM. |

Okay, I've discovered the problem -I'm an idiot.
All of the documents I have in the Personal Documents storage were on my device at the time. That's why the Documents menu was greyed out -there was nothing to download until they weren't on the device. With the cost of 3g being a $60 premium plus $0.99/MB, it's pretty pricey though. Especially when I'm going to have an iPad with me, and can pack the Kobo Mini as a pocket option. And the smartphone, of course. I still prefer the Kindle interface to Kobo's, though. Worth a try to ask. Thanks anyways! |

How many books are there? Will they not fit on the device? You should be able to fit years of novel reading on any of the above devices.

I go through several novels a week. My Calibre library is almost 5GB. There's also some PDF files in the mix. If I add manga or comics, you could easily double
triple that. There's a reason I've been stuck with Kobo the past two years, and it's not because I like epub. It's called SD cards. It's the same reason I got the Touch instead of the Basic, even though I prefer page turn buttons: I needed the 4gb. With 3g, if I can only use it for my Amazon purchases, it's less valuable, especially since the Whispernet costs outside the U.S.are six times more expensive. Let's say you go through 4 novels a week; that's about 200 in a year. The PW will easily hold 1000 novels, so that's 5 years reading. Do you really think that's a problem?

I tend to keep most of my archives with me, so I read whatever I'm In the mood for. I also like PDF files for reference on occasion. Manga tends to be the real space killer, even with resizing to fit. I used to go through 400pg paperbacks at a rate of 1 every day and a half or so. It's another reason I jumped over to ereaders.
Plus, I'm going to be off the grid for about a month, and away from home for quite a bit longer than that. If there was 4gb, I'd have easily jumped from the Touch to the Paperwhite ages ago.... but when I heard about it having as much storage as the $69 Basic, I began to look at Kobo. I wish the costs for Whispernet were lower. They've never been, though. |

Ah, yep, manga will do that. Is the size your only reservation with the Aura? That's what I'd go for if I was reading manga/GNs and needed the battery life of eink.

The Aura is big and heavy. But it has a decently sized screen with good resolution that makes many PDF files readable without zooming. But Kobo's software.... it's better than it used to be (as in changing fonts/font sizes won't automatically cause it to crash if done more than twice) but still requires too many resets via paperclip, and the PDF support is behind Amazon's.
I loved my K3 Keyboard enough to jump onto the Touch before it showed up in Canada (9 months later). I wanted to love the Paperwhite, but giving up the storage was a bit much. (Update: just had to pull the back off my Mini to reset it after it froze on a sync... again. I never had this much trouble with my Kindle. I miss that). To answer my own question (by making use of Amazon's fair return policy), I got a PW about two weeks ago, and found my Baen books (already in my Personal Documents archive) appear to be considered Amazon books as far as the 3G access goes - I have access to them. Whether that works when I'm travelling will be another story.
I love the 5.3.x software on the Touch, and I love it more on the PW 3G. But after buying manga from Amazon, I've lost a 1.17GB of space to it, and I'm down to about 100mb. Oh well - as long as I can redownload things (the manga I used wifi for, due to the size), I think I know which unit will travel with me. The Aura has the HD screen and SD slot, but the Kindle has far better software. Last edited by Haesslich; 08-10-2013 at 10:41 PM. |
