They explain that in Star Trek Enterprise. The klingons were experimenting with a formula to make super klingons. The formula was originaly used to make Khan and his people so it ended up having human dna in it. When the klingons started dieing because of the stuff they kidnapped a doctor who eventually found a cure ..the problem though is that their appearance was altered and it took several generations for it to clear up. According to Worf the klingons find the whole thing VERY embaressing and do not like to talk about it . There you go that should help.

It was explained in an episode of Enterprise. About that time transgenic humans made a reappearance. One of the things they did was capture a Klingon warship (the humans were stronger faster and tougher).

Klingon scientists somehow got a sample and started experimenting (because they can't stand being second best). One of the early test gene sequences has an odd interaction with a virus that the test subject happened to have. The virus mutated and went from being a cold to a plague. It could have wiped out the Klingons species.

The cure involved splicing more human DNA into Klingons. An unfortunate side effect was smooth foreheads.

Thank you. "Enterprise" is the one ST series I've not watched. Sounds like I have some catching up to do!

I figured it would be a suitably LAME explanation like that. Naturally, I'd expect a virus cure to not only change Klingons' appearance upon curing them... but that they'd change back later (like Kang, Kor and Koloth did)...

That's why I never watched Enterprise. That sloppy revisionist history stuff just ticked me off. Enterprise should have started out with human-looking Klingons that altered themselves after meeting humans (out of some xenophobic reaction or something). That would have made sense given Klingon animosity towards humans.

But anyway...

You know what put me off "Enterprise"? It may sound daft, but it was the title scenes (which, for anyone who hasn't seen it, are an illustration of the history of spaceflight), which made out that the USA had been singlehandedly responsible for the development of spaceflight. Not one single illustration of the fantastic achievements of the Soviet Union.

That annoyed me so much, when I watched the pilot episode, that I never watched another one.

I agree. This didn't bother me until just after the Chinese put their first astronaut in orbit. I kept waiting for them to add a shot of him, but they never did.

Just another example of the short-sightedness of the series and its producers. That short-sightedness was clear from the pilot episode (Klingons indiscriminently hate all others, Vulcans look down on humans as inferiors, etc), not to mention the obvious pandering to the audience (like the obligatory "hot chick in the skintight outfit," etc), and made it impossible for me to get into it.
