well. just an update.

took kobo aura #2 back to store (Chapters/Indigo) but this time i went to a different branch of Chapters in the off chance this store got a different batch of readers. The exchange went well, quick and painless with no hassle. Also this time i also said maybe i should get a different color seem to have bad luck with the black ones. So i got the (mocha?) one.

after the exchange i had them open the box and start the thing. crank up the light to 100%. looked good in the store. got home and set up the wifi etc... left it on at 100% light as it charged. after an hour still looking good. no pin holes.

the only oddity. when i was setting up. even tho i chose English as my language the keyboard looked like it was greek. Instead of the ABC button being ABC it was odd characters. thankfully i do not have to use the keyboard much so as long as it reads in english and no pinholes i am happy.

I think the only language with "odd characters" is japanese and it should only come up when a) the interface is set to japanese and b) the book you are reading is japanese (and you want to take notes or something)

I wonder if something is corrupted. If you aren't too far along, I would do a sign out and sign in and if that didn't work a factory reset. You might not use the keyboard that much, but I know I personally would rather sort the problem at the beginning than after I've perfected everything to my liking.

First key to left of space bar on keyboard selects seldom used for english character set. You might have accidentally made this selection. The same key should now show standard english letters and pressing that key again changes it back to standard key board.

thank you filmo. i will check out that key. This keyboard change happened as i was setting up the new aura so no chance of reading any books.

ok - just checked and i see the 2 keys now. did not notice it before. there is the
#&+ key and a EAC (with accent on top of first 2 and squiggle on the bottom of C)
hitting those 2 keys switches back and forth btwn the special characters and normal characters. so all is good. day 2 and still perfect screen so it looks like aura #3 is a keeper.

now awaiting for the sleep cover to arrive. got it online because it was ½ the price of the
same cover in the stores.
