I can speak for the Sonys and Kindles. Both work the same even if you fill up almost all of the memory. Pretty sure Kobo is the only one with these kind of problems but could be wrong.

I have a PRS-T2 and had the same thing.

Is there a chance getting a higher class of SD card would help? The guy at Kobo kept asking me about class. I have a lower class card right now a NEXXTECH 16GB MICROSD CARD.

Thanks to everyone for helping, if anyone thinks of anything, please let me know.

It's more likely that the Kobo Guy was looking to blame your problem on the use of a greater than class 4 card. The fact is, the class of the card should not cripple any device. The device might not be able to function so as to take advantage of a card's capability to operate at higher speeds, but it should still function as well as with a lower rated card.

That said, trying a different SD card is a good idea, there is a certain amount of wiggle room in the SD spec.s and a device can have compatibility issues with SD cards that are sold as having the same specifications, as those that do work with the device.

Be sure to let us know if you find that a change of SD card improves the situation.

Luck;
Ken

... and these are the 2 who really are keen to know everything about ALL your books!!!

I have always hated ereaders for slow processors. I have 2 Kobo Touch units, both rubbish in that respect, the iRex iLiad wasn't much good either in spite of everything high end about it. I don't have this problem on Aura. I don't want to put too many books on it from my library of 1320. It is so easy to clutter up your digital devices. I carry my whole Kindle and Calibre libraries on iphone and my ipad but I had always planned to keep the Aura HD clutter-free, hence my avoiding the use of an SD card. If there is no extra storage, I will think before pushing everything onto this lovely little reader that I have found after searching for almost 15 years (since the days of Pocket PCs and Palm devices, the early days of Windows CE).

When going through the AuraHD's description on the Kobo site, I don't see where I, or anyone else would have gotten the information to "know better".

I still have hope that an open source firmware will appear that provides this natural ereader device feature to the Aura.

I agree with you there Ken, That's one of the perks of an E-reader. The ability to take your entire library with you . And its lighter and easier then carrying a number of books on the plane with you. Also variety is the spice of life.

You should definitely try a different SD card, especially if it is the same one you used in your T2. I have a 32G in my Aura and an 8G in my T1.

Both work fine with no dots etc. I have had no problems with more than 4000 books on the T1 and no different problems with the Aura then when they were in main memory.

Have you tried putting the books in main memory instead and removing the card just as a trouble shooting method?

I fixed the problem! When adding books via Calibre all I needed to do was go to "Configure Device" then uncheck "sub directories" I added 600 books at once and no problem!

So if anyone is having this problem you should try that.

Thanks so, so much to everyone who responded.

Well I was wrong, I've added the 2000 books and now I'm having the same problem. I've asked Kobo for a refund but they keep saying that since it's over 30 days since I bought it they can't process the order.
Darn, I really thought I had the problem licked.

I don't wish to start a whole new discussion of this, but sdhc card size does affect throughput when reading/writing to the cards. It may sound counterintuitive and it is, but the faster higher rated cards are only faster transferring larger files because of the way the memories and busses are organized. In fact, larger higher rated cards may actually be CONSIDERABLY slower for smaller files than smaller more slowly rated(class 2 or 4) cards. Check through the forum for posts backing up what I'm saying, they might be in the developer's section.

I just have a standard card, nothing fancy and it's the Kobo itself that's slow. turning pages in the library, the covers are slow to load. The Kobo is simply not capable of handling that many books.

If you're feeling adventurous you might try changing the internal SD card itself to a bigger one...Then you wouldn't have the lag that you get with the books on the external SD. It's been done on Minis and Glos (that I know of).

Try the following...

Put the books on the internal memory and see what happens. Also, there could be an issue with some of your eBooks. So put a only a small number at a time. When you have the problem, delete the last batch of books and try different ones.

That would take forever Most of these books are downloaded from Flag and I've never had a problem. Unless there was a way to mass check I just don't have the time to do that with over 5000 books.

But if it is a problem with one or more of the ePub, then you could have problems no matter which Reader you try.

One way that might work is to use the Kobo Touch Extended driver. While it does save the ebooks to .kepub format, it also does some error checking during the process. One co-worker found that it tossed errors on 10 of his 1100 ebooks the first time he used it. After he cleaned those up, his Glo was a much happier device.

David
