I am trying to use the basic highlight, nothing has been annotated yet, but even annotating is problematic.

As for side-loaded kepub, I am up to date of calibre and its extended plugin. There is a new version of it since yesterday, and I will try it again tonight.

It is quite strange that we don't obtain the same results for the Kobo books, it would mean that the problem is about the Aura, supposing we both have the same system software [2.5.2]

I don't really expect them to be different. The way they are stored in the database is the same except for whether there is a note or not.

I have just been playing with the new version and have no problem with lots of highlights in a chapter. But, I have found a problem.

If the highlight goes from the first sentence of the paragraph to the second sentence, the next paragraph and the rest of the chapter is highlighted. This is caused by the way the extended driver sets the id spans in the book.

Well, I wasn't thinking of that. I am actually running beta firmware. But, I wasn't expecting a change in this area. Maybe there has been a fix.

I have downloaded the latest kobo extended plugin [05/31/2013] for calibre and put it on test.

I am very sorry but it still doesn't work, sideloaded kepubs books allow highlights up to 10-20 words and then it just goes blank up to other words.

I use my kobo mostly as a research tool and I'm always highlighting passages, thus I'm always facing these highlighting bugs. The one that annoys me the most is the whole chapter highlighted as consequence of highlighting some passage. Though the passage gets properly added to the annotations menu, the chapter becomes almost unreadable (everything is highlighted).

Is there a way to correct this?

What type of books does this happen with? Sideloaded epubs, sideloaded kepubs using the extended calibre driver or some other sort of book?

I didn't read back through this thread when I posted earlier, but that is the problem I described a few posts up. From memory I put a longer description including the problem with the spans in the extended driver thread.

Thanks for the replies. You have pointed me out in the right direction. I've had this problem with all the books I read on kobo, but all of them are konverted (pun) kepubs from the extended calibre device driver.

Guess I have to wait for the bug to be corrected.

He should, but I don't know if a bug report was ever raised. I don't use the extended driver except when I'm testing something like this or to make sure I don't break it to badly with a change in the main driver.

I see no one has posted in this thread for a while. I'll just say on the latest firmware, highlighting is still broken for Kepubs on my Kobo Glo -- it just stops working after a while (and it's not just that the highlighting doesn't appear; the highlight doesn't get recorded in the list of annotations). This really, truly sucks -- I read tons of nonfiction for research, and the inability to reliably and frequently highlight is a huge problem for me.

How many annotations does it take before this happens? Right now, I have a kepub that has 22 annotations and 25 bookmarks. And that is after I removed some earlier this week. I think it had about 40 of each. I don't remember why it had this number of annotations as it looks I just selected random words on the page. The only thing I can think of is I was testing how many I could add. But, I don't remember reaching a limit.

Are the kepubs from Kobo or sideloaded via the extended driver?

Hi, davidfor. It happens with Kepubs bought on the device directly from the Kobo bookstore; these aren't books that have been sideloaded or processed in Calibre.

I haven't done extensive testing, but it seems to often break the first time when I try to highlight either (a) text that includes a footnote call or (b) across paragraph boundaries. After such a highlight, it just stops working (and the highlight isn't recorded in the annotations list) for good for the book. It's never because I have a lot of highlights; usually I get no more than 3 or 4 before things go south for me.

Thanks!

I'm facing the same problem. In the first chapter I have 3 notes and 8 highlights and I am not able to add more. If I move to the second chapter I am able to add notes.

When I try to add more notes to the first chapter I get a message saying that my new note was saved, which it's not happening.

I can't synchronise my notes with my kobo desktop application.
