I think it's a case of "Fare well" being right in cases where a person may fare well (ie do well) at a task and that you say farewell to them (or give them a farewell dinner) if they are going on a journey.

You've probably already decided. As a reader, if a book was set in a medieval period or something like it, I would expect: "fare thee well". The "thee" seems to add a touch of period detail in the linguistics, regardless of whether this is how it should or shouldn't be said.

Thanks all, I went with "farewell" though I might change that at some point. The time frame of the book is future, but the character is a bit of a throw back. I think using "thee" might be a bit much though.
