Just to confirm, if I'm using regular, non-portable Calibre, the "Calibre Library" (C:\Users\Selva\Documents\Calibre Library) will automatically be imported into the new installation, right?

I also made a backup of the above folder and C:\Users\Selva\AppData\Roaming\calibre as suggested by BR.

Am I all set to uninstall and re-install? Is there anything that I should be aware of, before proceeding?

Please advise wugac.. Thanks so much both of you.
Nothing special.
Uninstall
Reboot the PC for good measure
Install (BTW be sure you install the compatible version: Not W64 if on a 32 bit only CPU)

Thanks again, td.

I'm running Win 7 Pro x64. Didn't know Calibre had a 64bit version. As mentioned at the download page, I guess I'll be ok if I try to install x64 after uninstalling x32, since they use the same plugins and settings?

Quote:
64bit calibre can be installed at the same time as 32bit calibre. The two calibre installs will use the same book library, plugins and settings.
I assume the 64bit version is just as stable?

@adrenaline Go ahead with the 64bit uninstall/install. Its as good as gold on Win7, although some have had problems on Win8 - but as td says the two can coexist.

Sod's/Murphy's Law says that now you've taken precautions in case something does go wrong, then nothing will go wrong

Thanks again, BR

I just uninstalled, restarted my PC and tried to install Calibre x64 but I get the message that setup wasn't able to complete Tried installing x32 version but no luck.

Any ideas? I uninstalled a bunch of stuff yesterday, like ghostscript, etc.. But I'm not sure if that has to do with these errors..

ps: If I decide to do a fresh OS install, should I copy those 2 folders (C:\Users\Selva\Documents\Calibre Library and C:\Users\Selva\AppData\Roaming\calibre) from my backup, before beginning to install Calibre?

Thanks again for helping me out, guys.. Greatly appreciate it.

It looks as one of the uninstalls took something with it that it "shouldn't" have done, maybe by unregistering a system dll.

First thing to try is System File Checker http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

You should not need to reinstall windows, you should be able to do a "repair" if sfc doesn't work - you'll need the installation media.

BR

Addenda - I just uninstalled, downloaded and installed a fresh 64bit on my Win 7 system - no problems at all.

Yeah, I guess so. I was using Revo Uninstaller and Your Uninstaller to "clean" uninstall everything!..

Thanks a lot, BR. I'm trying SFC right now. Hopefully, it works. If not, I'll try Windows repair.. Yeah, I have the disc.

Yeah, those uninstallers have been known to create more problems than they prevent, especially on Vista. They had some value 10-15 years ago - today, I'm not so sure. I stopped using Revo when I converted to Win 7 in early 2009 - then I decided it was something I could live without so I never installed the Win 7 compatible version.

So sorry for the delay, BR. Lesson learnt! Would never use those things again

SFC didn't help, so I'm backing up my data in case 'Repair' screws up anything.

If I'm forced to do a fresh OS install, should I copy those 2 folders (C:\Users\Selva\Documents\Calibre Library and C:\Users\Selva\AppData\Roaming\calibre) from my backup, before beginning to install Calibre?

If not, could you guys please advise what would be the right way to get Calibre up and running with my existing book collection?

Thanks so very much for your time and comments..

You might want to read this article about Win7′s no-reformat, nondestructive reinstall.

It is located at the following:

Good luck.

I also would receive a similar error as the OP when my Windows Installer was screwed up. I had to reinstall the OS on my fairly new computer at the time.

Thanks Mcafee and Jersysman!

Yeah, I'm leaning towards a reinstall

Sorry to keep pestering and this would be my last question:

Once I successfully reinstall Win 7, should I copy those 2 folders (C:\Users\Selva\Documents\Calibre Library and C:\Users\Selva\AppData\Roaming\calibre) from my backup, before beginning to install Calibre? Or can I move them once Calibre is installed?

If not, could you guys please advise what would be the right way to get Calibre up and running with my existing book collection (once the reinstall is done)..

Thanks a ton everyone for your time..

I don't think Calibre cares. As long as the path to the library is the same (if it is not, all you end up with is an additional 'empty library' . Just switch to the correct one.)

Thanks so much everyone. After reinstalling, I was able to get Calibre up and running with my collection. As you guys recommended, I just moved the library to the usual location.
