Your Gen3 is new, I believe - it should already have firmware build 538. Check it on the "About" box.

It's not, it's older, I bought it from a bloke on eBay, hardly used - saved myself about £80 and didn't have to wait for Bookeen's next batch

Just a thought concerning the various types of bugs related to dictionary lookup: I would by no means be suprised if the type of bug you get / not get depends on the dictionary (or group of dictionaries) you actually use ...

... for instance, I am only using the Concise Oxford Dictionary and despite having the BooReader Build 476 never encountered the issues HarryT describes, while HarryT (if memory serves me well) uses several dictionaries at once, the Chambers dictionary being one of them.

I.e. maybe:
Chambers dictionary + Build 476 -> hangups, reboots
Oxford dictionary + Builde 476 or 538 -> 'fast / fastidious look-up bug'

No, I only use the one dictionary - the Chambers one. Other people have reported the hangup/reboot bug with different dictionaries, however. As you say, though, it could well be that it only happens with some dictionaries and not others. The good news, though, is that the problem appears to be completely resolved in build 538.

I installed the update, so my Cybook is now running build 538. I had not encountered the dictionary bug that Harry describes, so I cannot comment on that, but the Bookeen seems to be more responsive than it was before.

I have not encountered the bookmarking issue since I stopped syncing books to the SD card, so the bookmarking issue is not so important to me any more. It is much faster and easier to copy books directly to the SD card, so I don't think I'll sync items to the SD card in the future.

One of my issues that may have been addressed with this update was that I could not read library books on the Cybook because of some kind dating issue. When I received the email from Bookeen that provided a link to the update and directions on how to install it, I was asked to email Bookeen after I had successfully upgraded my Cybook and they would send me a quick procedure to set the system date to resolve this issue. I sent an email yesterday and await their response. As soon as I perform this quick procedure, I will check a book out of the library and verify whether the problem is fixed.

I can confirm that. Now I just wished the lookup mode could be accessed by a single key press instead of having to activate it in the menu.

I also wish you always could get out of the lookup mode without having to press the back button on the side.

Do you mean out of lookup mode, or back to the book from the dictionary? For the latter, "back" seems to be the most appropriate button to use. How would you like to see it work?

Back to the book from the dictionary. I would like to have a "back" alternative in the multiple word menu. Now I have to shift position and look at the side to find the back button every time I look up a word that has multiple choices. That is the only time I use the buttons on the side so I have not yet learnt which one is the back button. And even if I know what button it is I have to move my hands to press it. You should be able to get out of the dictionary only using the D-pad.

I agree that back seems the best (you are talking about on the menu, correct?), but on my Cybook it doesn't always work right. (I'm using the Chambers dictionary.) Sometimes I can't get back to the book I'm reading -- instead, the back choice sends me back further into the dictionary. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough that I am beginning to be afraid of using lookup mode. Or are you referring to some other way to get back to the book reliably? I'm very tired of getting stuck in the dictionary -- am I doing something wrong?

No, I'm talking about the "Back" button on the left side of the machine (the next to bottom button). That works 100% reliably for me- I'm also using the Chambers' dictionary.

Thanks, I'll try that then.

PS Worked great -- no more wandering around in the dictionary!
