Regex to search at beginning of line - Page 2

Hm, becoming quite bold, there's another book with a similar problem, only that the, for example, [Pg 6] terms are embedded in only "normal" span tags, such as [Pg 6], viz. without a specific tag. How can I remove them without interferring other "normal" span tags?

Try search of

Code:

<span>\[Pg\s\d+\]</span>

replace with empty
the \[ means include a [ char - needs to be escaped
the \s means whitespace
the \d+ means one or more digit

I dislike overly wild S&R terms. Yours will only match what is desired

Great! I find regex a fascinating materia, and after getting such shorthanded, well-working advice, I wonder how I can be trying so many times, ever committing some mistake. How can one study this (the introduction in mobile read is really short for absolute beginners)?

I regularly referred to http://www.regular-expressions.info/ when first learning. Very good for pointing out the differences in the various flavors of Regex.

Would the following regex work in Sigil?

\[Pg [0-9]*\]

That works in Notepad++.

It would work BUT
It would also match Zero digits (because you used * instead of +) and may leave a orphaned roman series with out the Pg that gave the clue of what it was. Yeah, I know romans are few and far between, but I prefer best practices

Maybe we should consider a sub-forum to the Regex examples sub-forum for Regex questions? Not snarking, but it might seem to be a sensible place to put it. Just a thought. That way, other people searching for regex answers might be able to look in two places--the regex examples and the regex questions--which might be helpful.

Maybe we need to start posting the examples to the Wiki and pointing people to it instead of a thread or threads?

I know we have a regex sticky; that's kind of what I was thinking. I mean...the regex sticky, to me, anyway, looks like regex examples from people who know what they are talking about. Right? I mean, if I had a question, I wouldn't ask there, if that makes sense. Examples, not questions. (Does that make sense to anyone else?)

Well, that's not a bad idea. Maybe group regex by type, or by goal? I'm honestly not complaining about the regex threads, I'm just thinking, if people could have a "one-stop shop," it would be genuinely helpful. Just my $.02. And we all know that there is some mighty, mighty regex-fu available amongst MR'ers, that would be an invaluable resource (hell, I'd like to have a regex research resource my own damn self, as my regex-fu is weak).

Sorry for my monster thread! But I would not have thought that the sticky thread would be for absolute beginners like me.

A special subforum would, however, really useful.

Edit: Be useful, of course.
