But is there any way to change the color of the highlight? It's way too dark for me.

I just upgraded on my laptop and my desktop, and it was fine on my laptop and too dark on my desktop. I have windows 7 but I use the Windows Classic interface because using Aero it says you can change background colors, but it lies - it only changes it on some windows. Anyway, in the Control Panel I went into Display, Personalization and choose Window Color on the bottom of the screen. In there there is a drop down labeled Item. Choose Selected Items and you can choose both the background color and text color. I made the background dark and the text light, and now Calibre looks good.
