3/4's of the items that Amazon sell won't ship to Japan. At first I thought it was just because of trade agreements between Sony Japan and Sony USA, but when it turns out to be as varied and extensive as plastic picnic forks, socks, electric hair trimmers, doorbells, Q-tips, pizza cutter, vinyl gloves, and a host of other ordinary day-to-day items, there has GOT to be more to it than just trade agreements!

I don't understand why this would be considered Amazon's fault in any way? If Amazon isn't shipping the item, then they are just being used as a storefront for someone else, similar to ebay shops. Do people blame ebay if someone selling on there doesn't ship to their country?

Not blaming Amazon, just responding to Technisol as he didn't realize that not all items can be shipped outside the US and thought it was import rules... There's not much point complaining about it, it just "is", so I look for the same or similar item elsewhere (which often ends up to be eBay).

Oh, he fully realized certain items are not able to be shipped outside US manufactured by US companies, esp. tech., but how that affects a Chinese product purchased through a US Storefront/facilitator sent to Canada one must wonder.

However, he was very surprised to find that items as innocuous as an ereader cover might not be shipped from China to Canada... Again wondering what the trade restriction or shipping policy causing that would be? Perhaps import taxes or something the shipper does not wish to bother with, or cannot be quoted up front? I've seen mention of some sort of VAT(like items trading to England) or the like being possible when buying items from Canada through EBay, perhaps it's that, but on incoming goods? C'mon, you Canadians should know the drill on this if you've bought stuff from importers.

I've been through the drill often enough. However, most of the issues seem to be shippers who simply don't want to ship to Canada or any where other than the 48 contiguous states.

The real laugh was one gentleman in Toronto who will not ship to Canada. His reasoning being that if he only ships to the States, he doesn't have to worry about taxes while if he ships inside Canada, he has to collect and remit the HST or the GST (and PST, if applicable).

At one point, I ended up borrowing a co-worker's mail box in Blaine, WA. as the ship to address (it's one of those PO box rental places that gives what looks like an apartment number to the box), then driving down and picking the package up on the weekend. This was after my first order took over 4 weeks to arrive at my door. The shipper's claim was that the delays in shipping were on the Canadian side of the border while the tracker showed the parcel sitting in a facility in Indiana(?) for over 16 days with no movement before it miraculously appeared on this side of the border and was delivered to me about 40 hours later.

Regards,
David

I've tried to order items from Amazon that they will not ship to Canada. This was not from a merchant but Amazon themselves. I've also had orders from Amazon where the delivery time was well over the maximum time suggested by their website for a shipment to Canada with the chosen shipping mode. I won't even get into their very generous estimates for shipping, customs, etc. except to say that about 66.6% of the time, they have ended up crediting a refund of a portion of those charges.

Oddly those experiences made for rather humourous moments when reading the complaints from various people about shipping from Canada to the States.

David

Wow, interesting. It seems, as suspected, that the shipper is likely the party unwilling to do business, not Amazon. I have no reason to support Amazon beside being treated well when I've bought through them, but it seemed unlikely they would limit trade and income.

I suspect the Chinese shipper is reluctant to ship to Canada based on some import duties, fees, etc that they don't understand or that may or may not be levied until the package is in Canada and may lead to people refusing to pay the duties, etc.

I can understand wanting to avoid dealing with tax departments, audits, etc. Small businesses are subject to far too much baloney to do business, and don't have the resources to deal with the paperwork nightmares or pay for another employee just to deal with paperwork. There should be a push to streamline requirements for companies commensurate with how much business they do, or how many they have on staff in order to ease such burdens. In general, if government(both State & Federal in the US) made it simple to satisfy their policies, there would be fewer people inclined to try to duck them.

I'm pretty sure it's not a Chinese issue with shipping to Canada. I've bought some incredibly cheap stuff shipped directly to Canada, from outfits like DealExtreme, where they offer items such as a USB microSD card reader for $1.05, *shipping included*. And you need only buy 1.

Not sure how profitable that business model is, but these outfits seem to thrive.

Maybe it simply has something to do with a US company like Amazon being involved vs. direct purchase from a Chinese supplier? Perhaps some sort of trade agreement between US & Canada or US & China gets in the way because it becomes a 3 cornered deal?

I can't see Amazon willingly turning down even a penny considering that with a bazillion transactions they add up fast.

Once again I am mystified by forces beyond my control...

My cover arrived yesterday and took just under 2 weeks (expected delivery was June 12-28, so it was quite a surprise).

It's actually quite nice the way the Glo fits inside it. It is a little thicker than the Gecko Slimfit cover and not as stiff, but it works very well to protect the reader. The magnetic closure really is secure, I can't see it ever opening up even if tossed inside a purse, etc., and the sleep works perfect as well.

Great item for the $8.99 price.

Awesome....still waiting for mine but it hasn't been two weeks yet.

Nothing today....I hope for tomorrow. We both ordered on the 17th, and I am a bit farther east than you, so tomorrow could be my lucky day!

My covers came today! They are really nice.

The Glo cover is just perfect.

The Mini cover is extremely nice, but the auto on/off does not work. It could be due to the inner pocket, which I may try to cut out. Other than that, it's fantastic.

Yes, it has the feature and it works nicely with the Kobo cover but not with this one. booklover6, if cutting the pocket works for you, please, tell it because I have the same cover and the same problem.

And about shipping, I can't buy this from amazon.com and ship it to Spain, but I can buy it from amazon.es. So it's amazon doing, not seller.

it does work 80% of the time with a cheap navitech cover - did not know it was supposed to have this feature, nor it was advertised, but since the device was waking up, feeling the inside of the cover I felt a magnet.
