I see this has become confusing so I'll explain what is going on.
When you download a purchased MS Reader eBook, it is downloaded with Internet Explorer. The file automatically downloads and you do not get a choice of where to save it. It is always saved to the same location. Under Windows XP it it saved to C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\My Library where user is the name of the account you are using. So if your account name under XP is admin then user would be replaced by admin and that is where the eBooks are downloaded to. You don't have any choice it just happens. |

When MS Reader is installed and associated with .lit files the files should download to the My Library folder inside the My Documents folder.
When you download does the book automatically open up the reader software & display the book (after acknowledging that text to speech has been disabled)? If you open MS Reader software do the books you've downloaded show up in the library listing? If not I'm sure they've actually downloaded. I do remember having an issue with IE7's "security" settings when I first started downloading books. It would pop up a message at the top of the browser and you'd have to click on that & allow the download, which would reload the page & then download the file. Firefox shouldn't have anything to do with it. I've used three XP computers & two Vista computers to download .lit files from Fictionwise (note which store your downloading from should make no difference) and all have Firefox as the default browser. Also in the My Library folder should be a file called "LitPath.lpt" if you open that file & wade through the giberish you'll find titles of books and paths to where they are. |

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I am at work now, so I can't attempt anything new. But I can say that as far as searching for .lit files, I have done that for the entire computer, desktop and all. I have several .lit files, but I recongnize all of them, and none are recent files. I do have the "security" issue AnemicOak describes @ #17, and when I click the message at the top of the browser, it does reload the page and then downloads the file to "Temporary Folder" ... never to be seen again. |

So it says it's downloading to "temporary folder" and that's it? It doesn't open the reader software & display the file or anything? Makes me wonder if it's actually completing the download and saving it to the computer at all. Especially if you've done a *.lit file search & turned nothing up. I don't know how/why the computer would have them marked as hidden, but do you have it set to "show hidden files and folder" under Tools/Folder Options/View in explorer?

But I have one more hope. You mentioned a file called "LitPath.lpt I can find that right in the My Library folder, but I do not know how to open and read it. What program do I use? Thanks again. |

Thanks, AnemicOak. I used notepad. And it has no mention of the file I am trying to download.
It must not be completing the download. I guess I will try to get fictionwise's attention again. It is gonna suck if I can never manage to use their service. |

I think IE may be downloading the e-book but failing to open it with MS Reader and then (therefore) deleting it.
Try downloading 1632 by Eric Flint from the Baen Free library using Internet Explorer (select the unzipped MS Reader version). This took about a minute to download when I tried it. It was downloaded to a temporary file, but then MS Reader opened on 1632 and the .lit file ended up in My Documents\My Library. It is also now in the library view when ever I open MS Reader. If this does not work for you, then there is something wrong with your MS Reader installation. If it does work, then try buying and downloading FictionWise's free test eBook Origins of Wish You Well: A Short Essay. Clicking its "download ebook" link in "my bookshelf" should go through the same steps as for 1632 - the only difference is that (as AnemicOak says) there is a "text to speech has been disabled" popup once MS Reader opens. You can try this first if you like (skipping 1632), although I assume it will fail for you. One final thing you could try is to follow the steps in Fictionwise's Saving Microsoft Reader Files on your PC: this apparently avoids the need to actually open MS Reader. Fictionwise does not say so, but this seems to be the route to go if all you ever want to do with a LIT is download it for later format shifting. |

It's definitely something to get worked out as no matter where you buy from any DRM'd lit is going to use the same method of downloading, not just Fictionwise. |

Eureka!
You won't believe it. Or, maybe you will. I downloaded the 1632 unzipped lit file from Baen, and had the same problem as before... it would download only to disappear in the ether. So I thought I would just try the zipped lit file, and see what happened. The file downloaded, I unzipped it, then I double clicked on the lit file, and it immediately “expanded” (as if by CLIT) and created a new folder with the expanded files inside. Next right clicked on the original 1632 lit file, and low and behold, the default action was to invoke CLIT and expand the file. Next I removed CLIT, re downloaded the lit book I originally wanted from Fictionwise, I got the expected dialog box, saved the file, and it worked perfectly!! It seems the file previously was downloading, but when finished, it was being told to “expand” and NOT interface with MSReader, so it deleted itself. All is well, but now I need to figure out how to re-install CLIT (ConvertLit, the gui version) and NOT have it became the default action for lit files. Thanks, Wallcraft, AnemicOak, and all other for the help. This is one headache solved... sow on to the next one! |

Glad you got it working. You could always not use the Clit gui and just use the Clit 1.8 command line program. It works great & is easy to use.

Here is how you fix the LIT files. Download one, then reinstall ConvertLIT. Right click on the LIT file, and select "Properties". Change the program that it is associated with back to MSReader. |

After all that, the lit ebook I got from Fictionwise did not have an available "key" for downconverting, at least according to convertLIT (and the ReaderKeyRecoveryTool),
But I just used Libprs500 and used the expanded html file to convert to LRF. It actually worked out real nice. Thanks again to all! This is a great community, and I hope I can do my share of helping out in the future! |
