Well, I have the Paperwhite now, and just as I ordered it, the problem my Kindle Keyboard was having went away. I really don't know what to do now. I like them both, still prefer the physical page turn buttons, but do like the touch screen. I'll just have to figure out which one I prefer and whether or not I'm afraid of the KK having more issues.
montalex, thanks for the link! Did you order the parts and do the repairs yourself? |

Yeah, it is very easy to open up the Kindle3 and disassemble it. There are plenty of how-to videos out there. I stick with the K3 because I like the physical Keyboard, free 3G and changeable battery.

I was going to offer the same link.
![]() I had seen the video on repairing a K3 with a broken screen, and bought one just to see if I could do it. Unfortunately, I misread or misremembered the price of the replacement screen, and I paid as much for the repaired one as if I'd got a bargain on a working one from eBay. Still the sense of accomplishment is worth something, neh? Although there are times when the on-screen keyboard is a PITA, and I sometimes miss the audio component, and there's no 3G, and the storage is half the size I, personally, prefer the Paperwhite. When did they finally stop selling the KKs? I would have sworn that they were still offering them the last time I looked, but I didn't look any closer so I can't say if they were new or refurbished. (shrugs) I was really pleased with the service from PowerbookMedic. The prices for all the parts are pretty much dirt cheap, except for the screens. Of course, when you think about it, that's the most fragile part of any of the Kindles, and the part everybody breaks... knock on wood. ![]() |

I think they are still selling the KKs, but they don't advertise them on the kindle home page. You only see it if you click "compare kindles".

Oh, yeah. I just saw the "currently unavailable" note! Well, I guess that settles the question of what I will do when my KK gives up the ghost. I probably won't buy another one.

Althouch why anyone would want the Keyboard, I don't know since it costs more than the Touch OR the Paperwhite and is not nearly as good. |

Thanks. Yes, the 3G Kindle Keyboard without Special Offers was still available last time I checked, but it's $159, which is more than I want to pay, and don't want to buy off eBay. In the end I decided to go with the path of least resistance. I'm keeping the Paperwhite.
Better and worse are specific to everyone's personal experiences and needs. The Paperwhite may be prettier, but I do a lot of my reading on very crowded train commutes, and I prefer the KK's a bigger frame to hold on to, and the buttons which I have found very easy to use one-handed. But the PW has other advantages, which are what drew me to try it out, so I'm moving on... |
