So far, so good. I always make sure to test the case before actual use though, by just putting a piece of Kleenex in it and keeping it submerged in water for a while, to see if any water seeps through.

It is safe but you need to make sure that you set the seal well. I got a little water in mine when I was floating in the river but I had not set the seal properly. My Kindle works just fine even after that.
