I'd say neither; it's Lily7's personal preference.

I always use a card in my readers. I think it's a hangover from the pocket pc days. I didn't think about it, I just put a card in.

Thanks to everyone for the information. I'm not a 100% convinced I need an SD card, but since I can get an 8GB card from Amazon for $6, I've ordered one just to have a backup.
One last question. Is it possible to move books form the SD card to the internal storage without a computer? |

No, you can't move books between internal/external SD from the reader sadly.
I'm another avid Manga reader, so a card is a must for me, and one of the main reasons I chose the Glo over the Paperwhite. I wish the touchscreen was capacitative like the Paperwhite though, the IR touch on the Glo just isn't as responsive. |

I use a SD card on the 650 once in a while just because it has no WIFI capabilities. So when I want to load a book or some news collected through Calibre, I put them on the card. That way I don't have to plug the device to the computer and wait for it to be charged or have to stop the charging process. On a 650 it's impossible to read while it's plugged to a computer.
The lack of card on the Mini doesn't bother me at all. |

Correct, it's just my personal preference. I have so many ebooks, and not all of them will fit on the main memory, even though I vastly prefer them there. And because there's so many I had to pick a definite size limit for myself in order to quickly decide which memory an ebook would go to, rather than sitting there hemming and hawing over "would this ebook take up too much precious space on the main memory?"

I started using an SD card mainly for storing CBR files. I manage my ebooks in the main memory with Calibre and manually on the SD card. Just for a question of organising things ;-)

1) You can modify the file usr/local/Kobo/udev/sd to the effect that it moves all files/subfolders from a specific folder of the SD card to the internal storage, every time you insert the card. 2) You can start a script to the same effect by using KoboTweaks or KoboLauncher. A drawback of using this way is that you have to take care that the concerned books of the SD card are not read into the database (simplest way might be to add an unsupported extension, e.g. mybook.epub.xyz, and rename it when moving to the internal storage). and that these books get read into the database after they have been copied to the internal storage (simplest way might be to switch the reader off and on). By using notepad from the KoboLauncher, you could even edit the script in order to select individual files for copying. |

I've never used the SD or MicroSD card slot on any of my readers. My current reader doesn't even have one.
edit: Strictly speaking, the Kobo Mini's internal drive is a MicroSD card, so I *do* use it, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you're asking. |
