(he,he...back from China, so a Chinese book nomination...)
I read some good crime, were under The dragonbones from Lisa See, which is a political/historical crime in China. It is the 3rd in a series, but all can be read alone. I would like to nominate the first book The flower net by Lisa See ---- “Lisa See begins to do for Beijing what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did for turn-of-the-century London or Dashiell Hammett did for 1920s San Francisco: She discerns the hidden city lurking beneath the public facade.” (The Washington Post Book World) The time frame for Flower Net is January 10, 1997-March 14, 1997. The main narrative ends February 13, 1997—just before the death of Deng Xiaoping on February 19. Much of the story involves flashbacks to the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) and its traumatic impact on the lives of a great number of people. The novel's key characters are Liu Hulan, inspector in the Ministry of Public Security and a Red Princess, and David Stark, Assistant U.S. Attorney, who loves her. Gary Krist writes that "Hulan is a provocative mixture of vulnerability, bitterness and hardheaded practicality," a survivor of the Cultural Revolution who has learned that survival means hiding her emotions from the outside world.(from google.books) --- Last edited by desertblues; 05-06-2015 at 11:22 AM. |

I third a Suspension of mercy
Edit...I see this is be- thirded already. Will have to do some further research. (Josephine Tey is one of my favorites; pity there aren't more of her crime's. I loved her Shilling for candles as well as Brat Farrar. Good choice: the Daughter of time. And Herman Koch, which I didn't read as yes, being a Dutch autor....shame on me.. ![]() Last edited by desertblues; 04-21-2013 at 03:34 AM. |

Lisa See sounds very interesting - sorry I have used up my nominations. And I agree with you, desertblues: I really love Josephine Tey's books too.

I'll second Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton. Asimov got me interested in the scifi/mystery combination--this one by Hamilton looks interesting.

For my last nomination I'll second The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. It seems quite unusual
![]() BTW I have seen it on Amazon.com for $7.65 and on Amazon.co.uk for £4.99. Last edited by fantasyfan; 04-21-2013 at 04:11 AM. |

I've done some research
(The writing style in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie has been described as reminiscent of the "Golden Age of crime writing," influenced by the author's appreciation for the work of Dorothy L. Sayers, Arthur Conan Doyle, Ngaio Marsh, Agatha Christie, G. K. Chesterton, W. J. Burley, and Josephine Tey. Reviewer Lucy Clark compared Bradley's style to that of Agatha Christie) and I wanted to third it too. Well..........not fast enough......lagging behind in time today... |
