This might be addressed elsewhere, but who pays for the internet access on the Kindle? Does Amazon give the ISP/phone company a kickback for every new user account?

Truth. But it is a good gadget. High res (800 across, 480 down) and sexily small, it's my preferred device for surfing the web when my daughters won't let me near the laptop. I prefer the Iliad for book reading, though.
