- KUAL has a module for doing that, - JBPatch, Duokan, and my favourite - Coolreader by CrazyCoder. There are a few more options, but those haven't moved out of very early beta stage yet, or I haven't tried them out yet. As for why ... When you switch the light off completely in a moderately lit room the difference between the '0' and really off is quite big. With the light off you have just ordinary e-ink - which I happen to like. They wanted people to think that the screen is Paper White. Quote:

Hmmnn. Interesting personal variations. I tend to keep it at 17 or 18 in bright rooms to keep the white look. At 2-3 when my eyes are very dark adapted and at 6-8 when they are still not very dark adapted. Outside in full daylight (Florida very bright), sometimes I just turn the light off sometimes I have it at 18 to 20 if it is a bit overcast.

I can't go over 4 in a totally dark room. It hurts my eyes. I remember one time my hubby gave me his iphone in a dark bedroom to show me something. I grabbed it and it was like looking in the sun. I saw flashes for a while after. Ouch that hurt.
![]() Before I got my paperwhite, I used my old fire for a while and even the darkest setting wasn't dark enough for me, I had to get a dim app. When I first got my paperwhite I constantly fiddled with the light settings. 3, 12, 17. Now that I finally settled, I keep it at 4-5 at all times. Day and evening. Even if I am in bed its at 4. I don't read though in a totally dark room so I have a small lamp on the side. For me I want the PW to be readable at all times, without me having to fiddle. 4 does that. Or 5. Right now its at 4 and it stays for a while. I read a lot while watching TV. So I have a side lamp and its dark-ish in the room. With my kindle keyboard, I used to have to lean towards the light, which hurt my back and neck after a while. On setting 4 with the PW, it gets me enough light to not have to do that. I never really had any issues with the e-ink screen in bright light, so I don't need the light on the PW any higher either. But its fantastic when it gets darker inside, or when I am not near a window, outside, or at night. Now that I have had my light at low settings all the time, I tried putting it up at 17 just to see and I don't like it. It looks like its lit. I just want it to look a bit less dingy than the e-ink screen and more like paper. The moment I notice its lit its way to high. |

Yes JB required - I have the light toggle via Kual ![]() With the light off completely it looks exactly like the previous non-lit kindle screens There's quite a difference in lighting levels between PW units - 24 on my first one is equivalent to about 17 on the replacement (which it miles better overall). I tend to have mine at 2 in low light (bedside lamp on), about 8 in general artificial light and between 12 to 14 in natural light depending on how bright it is (not very in London at the moment!) I set mine at 12 almost everywhere, which works especially great for me while indoors with good lighting. I only turn it down to 4-6 when it's total darkness.

That's just it. I've never had a Kindle before. The Paperwhite is my first one so I don't really know how the previous Kindle screens look like. If anyone can provide me with a picture of their screen with the light completely off so that I can compare it with my KPW with the light at 0 I'd very much appreciate it.

That's right. You always needed fairly decent lighting to comfortably read an eInk screen prior to the introduction of frontlit readers.

Ok so this is irrelevant to the discussion but I didn't want to make a new thread just for it. So the question is this: can't I use my gift card credits to buy books from the Kindle Store on my Paperwhite? Do I have to buy using my credit card?

What problem are you seeing when you try to buy books? It should work just fine.
