Fire HD + as e-reader
Would you recommend the 8,9" HD+ to someone who would use it only mostly as an e-reader? Mostly PDF; the pdf reader should be good, but just to have a confortable reading.
Thank you. |

I prefer my 1st gen over my kindle e-ink reader for reading except by the pool. The bigger, back lit screen is easy on my eyes in most conditions and images in the books I read (mostly technical) display better. I can only imagine that another 2" of screen would make things better. I am concerned about the weight, but not much. If I were you, I'd visit Staples or Best Buy and do some e-reading to see how it suits you.

Thank you. There are no Best Buy where I am but I see the gist and that's a good idea.
I was expecting a new improved DX, that would be even larger than the HD+. However at 299€ for the 32Go, HD+ is cheaper than the large e-readers and that is something to consider. Besides, I am concerned about depending upon resellers of Chinese stuff for support. |

If you cannot put your hands on one, find another tab with similar dimensions and see how that feels -- use it for an hour or whatever you tend to read for. When we were buying our first big tv, we cut a piece of cardboard the same size as each set we were considering and put it right where the new tv would go. It really helped me get my head around some of the screen sizes. It's the same for a tab or e-reader. Even if you love the screen and the apps, you will hate yourself if it is so big or heavy you never use it. My first Kindle was a travel companion. I visited a lot of stores propping up my backside to see how well a reader would fit in the pocket. i even set off a Wal-mart security system, "I just wanted to see if it would fit in my pocket." They understood.

I've had the 7" and now an 8.9" - and the larger is way better, but it can depend on your usage.
For reading ebooks, I thought the 7" was better - more portable, lighter to hold for long periods, etc. The larger is way better for everything else. It's a must if you read a lot of technical PDF books. It's way better for video and web browsing. It's a great size and very slim. Even so, it's a bit heavy to hold for reading for long periods, although not really heavier than many hardback books. But for that reason I find the Kindle Fire cover works great - you can prop it up quickly for reading or watching movies/TV. I actually didn't use my smaller one for movies that much, but I watch a lot of movies/TV on the larger one and its great for that. Hope that's helpful DGG |

I already have a Kindle touch and it is a great e-reader except for PDFs. I was also given a first gen Kindle DX bought in the US second hand, and it's much better for reading pdf, although this one is probably a little obsolete and text is not always sharp.
I am waiting for a kind of super DX, next gen so to speak. But I am tempted by the 8,9" although it's probably on the small side for me - it's difficlut to read the FT even on 9.7". But the price is good, and if I can read PDF without eyesore, say 1 or 2h at a time, I think I 'll go for it. It's the ability to read without tiring my eyes that is critical. The rest is just added cream. I don't want to work, with this stuff, I don't want to communicate, I don't want to watch video etc. except occasionally. |

Harry, I did. But, the cost is 350 + freight, the technology is 18 month old and the support looks like a one man band in Germany. I am just waiting for the next generation. But cost and support are issues. I am no geek, I don't root any more than I look under the bonnet of my car.
