Perhaps best to scan initially to an image PDF, then OCR from that, rather than OCR directly from the scan. That way, you'll have the PDF to proof against at a later date.

Exactly. There is no need to do a scan/convert/proof/assemble on a book that already exists as an ebook. Way better to just go ahead and purchase it (or download a good copy if it is PD) than to spend a lot of time trying to do it yourself.

I have been doing this for a lot of older paperbacks that have never made it to an electronic format. Mainly, because I lost a really good collection of paper books some time back and wished I had spent a little time at least making the initial scan and clean. Some of those are still lost and I have found neither paper nor ebook versions to replace them.

If you value your time at all highly, a service like "1dollarscan" is going to be more economical then scanning books yourself. Be warned, though, that it is a destructive scanning process, so you won't get your paper books back again.
