Hi all,
I did not mean to diminish anyone's volunteer effort with this thread! I just love the idea of a single volume of all her work, some of which I had never even heard of ... probably because work lile her History of England is not necessarily in high demand...

"Sanditon" and "The Watsons" are both novels that she started and then abandoned ("Sanditon" has 11 chapters completed; "The Watsons" only 5). The other items are things she wrote as a teenager, in notebooks which were published long after her death, and is generally referred to as "Juvenilia". Do an Amazon search for "Jane Austen Juvenilia" and you'll find lots of different editions of it.

Ditto that.

Thanks for posting, xendula, but really the little I looked at was a mess, with hyphens thrown in randomly, after semicolons and colons, before and after quotation marks, a-piece, a-year. This would drive me nuts to try to read.

Forgive me for pointing this out, but this is not an error, but the way Austen wrote it. Many words were hyphenated in her day which are not today (or "to-day" as Austen would have written), and she uses dashes frequently before and after quotation marks, and after commas and semicolons. If you read any edition of Austen which does not have this, you're not reading the original. Some editors do "modernise" the punctuation, but I prefer to stick with what the author wrote.

Eg, a couple of random samples from "Pride and Prejudice":

Quote:
"Do let us have a little music,"—cried Miss Bingley, tired of a conversation in which she had no share.—"Louisa, you will not mind my waking Mr. Hurst."
Quote:
His plan did not vary on seeing them.—Miss Bennet's lovely face confirmed his views, and established all his strictest notions of what was due to seniority; and for the first evening she was his settled choice. The next morning, however, made an alteration; for in a quarter of an hour's tête-à-tête with Mrs. Bennet before breakfast, a conversation beginning with his parsonage-house, and leading naturally to the avowal of his hopes, that a mistress might be found for it at Longbourn, produced from her, amid very complaisant smiles and general encouragement, a caution against the very Jane he had fixed on.—"As to her younger daughters she could not take upon her to say—she could not positively answer—but she did not know of any prepossession;—her eldest daughter, she must just mention—she felt it incumbent on her to hint, was likely to be very soon engaged."

Ah, thanks for correcting me on that, Harry. The other editions I have read did not have that.

I have to say, that would still drive me crazy.

I read a lot of 19th century novels, so I guess I'm just used to it. Punctuation wasn't used in the same way 200 years ago that it is now.

This collection, by the way, has the same errors and omissions that most free versions do. Eg from Chapter XXX of "Mansfield Park", we have this non-sensical sentence:

Quote:
“When Fanny is known to him,” continued Henry, “he will doat on her. She is exactly the woman to do away every prejudice of such a man as the Admiral, for she he would describe, if indeed he has now delicacy of language enough to embody his own ideas.
Which should read:

Quote:
... for she is exactly such a woman as he thinks does not exist in the world. She is the very impossibility he would describe...
The text is bold is missing. You'll have to wait a few more weeks for my properly proofed version of "Mansfield Park" if you want a version with this - and numerous other omissions - corrected.

This version also "corrects" Love and Freindship to "Friendship."

Very glad to have Austen's most famous novels in the original spelling and punctuation styles and truer to the pre-scanned text, Harry.

One carefully prepared edition of a single novel is worth a thousand careless editions of collected works.

I agree entirely; I dislike "modernised" versions myself. Austen used spellings like "shew" and "chuse" - that's what I want to see, not editors who want to "help" me by changing to modern spellings.

I'm seeing the same thing in the Oz books with hyphenated words like to-day and to-morrow. Like you, I don't mind it if it's the way the author wrote it. I'm actually working on cleaning up a few of the PG versions of the Oz books, mostly for myself, but I may share when I'm done.

Naturally it's EUR 2.05 / GBP 1.64 (~ USD 2.70) for us Europeans, so I think I'll stick with the Goodreads files for the time being.
