Nonsense! It's not risky if you buy from a reputable seller.

Exactly. I've sold a fair few of my older Kindles on eBay. I have 100% positive feedback with 100+ transactions, so people know that I am trustworthy.

You have 3 kids under 5 years of age?
Stick with picture books for them.
If you have some older kids (like 10 or 12 years of age) you can buy kindle4 non touch (70$ model) and make it a personal present for them. No sharing with younger siblings. Its only theirs. I'm saying this because there was nothing more precious and enjoyable to me then reading books when I was about 10-11 years old. Even if your older kids dont like reading they might give it a go if you make it only theirs. Kids want certain autonomy at that age and sense that they are important. 10/12 year olds dont really want to be around 3 toddlers under 5 years. They would be rather cooped up in their room reading Harry Potter or Hunger Games. So make this kindle a present to them. They will appreciate it. And toddlers would prefer a picture book they can drool and draw on then having to sit quietly and read.

Kindle Fire is great but for children? I guess it's really not a good idea to let them use ereaders at an early age. You can buy them story books or something that's user friendly and not harmful for them.

I'd buy a good ereader for yourself and lock it up from the kids. I really don't think any ereader can take the abuse you're describing, they are still made of glass remember.

With one kid, it was easy enough to teach her to take care of things and she never broke any electronics; she was playing on my computers unsupervised under age 2. Actually I never had to teach her to be careful with it, it was just something she picked up from watching me on her own. But 5 kids playing and competing for one reader... it doesn't stand a chance, unless you're prepared to be there and supervise their use of it 100% of the time and have them sit in one place while reading.
