I remember passing by a thread or two about de-DRM'ing mobi formats but I'll have to look for them again. Pretty much I have only bought a couple books with DRM so it's not a big deal but if I wanna splurge on a new book it makes it frustrating.

I guess Mobipocket/Amazon figures folks on Linux are more likely to know how to get around their facts of life so why bother supporting the OS's by offering either open source, a fancy browser based app (see Google Reader) or somehow getting generic Linux versions done. Prob with Linux is the wide variety of hardware it runs on seems to make porting not impossible but often it's an adventure. Just happy we have FBReader. Even with the features not yet implemented I like it better then MobiReader or even eReader, though I have to say I really never gave eReader much of a look as MobiReader worked so well on my Clie.

BTW, I'll have to update the pic as I now added the iGo Stowaway BT keyboard to go with...my whole office now fits into a lunch sack...gotta love that...

I recently got my 770 back out of the desk drawer. It's a nice little gadget. But after a while I remembered why I don't use it: I can't rotate the screen and hold the device vertically. Did they ever enable that feature in the later versions of OS2007?

I never used OS2007, having just purchased my N800 just about 2-weeks ago...but I can say yes...annd ultimately, well no...what happens now is the application can provide the ability to rotate the display. FBReader does this. I have yet to find another app that uses this. And FBReader can rotate the display basically in all 90-degree increments to help use the device in the best position for you. Face it, these are really beta devices...in 4 years they will be great but for now it really is a niche device. And if Amazon had done the Kindle right from the start I would have been happy to have instead, plopped down the cash for a PDA/web browser/ebook reader device with EVDO access on US models. Instead I am bridging that gap with the N800 and my nx73v.

Then again all my other needs a landscape orientation is a must. Having never used an N770 I have no basis to compare. I can say with the N800 there is really no way for one handed operation like I have with my Clie. Amazing as it sounds it seems almost as if these tablets are not intended for one handed operation. And if they are...they missed by a wide margin and need to fire those engineers & designers. Geeze, it's Finland and they are close the the birthplace of ergonomic design as in Danish or Swedish Modern. You would think some of that would have rubbed off.

The buttons on the top are a mess really and the d-pad thing, well, with my hands it's extremely difficult to hold onto the device and operate the pad. And there is no way to scroll the display other then by touching the screen or using nav keys on an external keyboard.

It's quirky but it's cool...it serves one important function for me and that is excellent almost desktop level mobile web access. I need it for fast and discrete searches where even the smallest laptop makes too much of a commotion and the price point of any UMPC is way out of line.

Wanna know what design oversight bugs me the most...no place to attack a lanyard. I prefer to use a wrist lanyard with my handheld devices (hand problems). I have to buy a stick on type...the kickstand makes a nice handle though.

I don't know about the N770, but on the N800 you can rotate the screen in FBReader by pressing the center button of the D-pad. I use it that way sometimes, but usually I prefer the longer sentence width when I am reading. To make paging easier in landscape mode, I re-mapped the up/down keys on the D-pad to scroll by a full screen, instead of the default scroll by line. This is better than using the +/- keys for paging.

BTW, I just started reading "Cry from a far planet" (on my N800) that was posted here recently. So far, it seems to be a good story. Thanks to whomever posted it (I'm too lazy to go and look right now).

I have a N800 and a 770 I bought for my wife, both of which are used as ebook readers. I can't speak for the default OS2006 that comes on the 770, but using OS2007HE the 770 rotates and works great with FBReader.

Nate maybe the issue was the version of FBReader? I have not looked at the 'bugs' list for FBR in a while. Anyway, I know this thread was last active a month back now but maybe ya fingered out the solution?

That post is almost a month old, and was just a general comment on the UI of the 770.

yeah, Nate I saw it was, but given poor Misha is working on FBR alone it seems a month is not that long ago...

Oh, from what I understand it may be NEVER that it gets a Java runtime. Many reasons but most important is the ARM licensing is a problem. I understand the hooks are in the OS but they cannot provide the runtime.
I think that you're mistaking with the Jazelle hardware acceleration. It is allowed to make Java work on maemo but the GUI part is so tedious that nobody really worked on it and/or packaged the existing work.

EDIT: Just bought those Boxware filters. Hope that will help.

Just an update: since I've installed the boxwave filters, the writting recognition is almost perfect (unusable before) and it help a little for the glare.
