To get back to the OP's problem: So it was probably the Amazon update kicking in, thinking it would be a good moment since the "normal" reading framework was idle. Good that it recovered *despite* the reset, which probably happened when it was already runnning...

A partition with half old and half new firmware image could be a problem.

Resetting the kindle in the middle of it being busy rewriting the flash contents during an OTA update could be "interesting" (i.e. opportunity to learn the debricking procedure).

I'm so glad I didn't have to go through that! As interesting as it may be. If that's what happened, I think I'll turn wireless off next time I want to use kindlepdfviewer, just in case.
