Well, I'm from Pennsylvania and although plum is a fruit it has also been used as a description, as "a good (plum) woman" or "a good man" or "something is plum."

Zwetschenmännle are small puppets, typically sold on a 'Christkindlemarkt' in Southern Germany, like Nürnberg. You can see a stall selling those puppets on this picture.
Those puppets are made from nuts and dried plums. A nice article can be found here. |

In the South we would say she is a real "peach" meaning something special. Great.
Also that is "peachy" meaning great usually. A "prune" wasn't so nice. |

Not to be a crankypants, but how is this topic getting to stay in the General board rather than being moved to the Lounge? Is it because a moderator finds it interesting? How is this related to ebooks?

Thanks to everyone for all your help!!
These signs are found on "prune people," so the translations make perfect sense. One is a man bearing gifts, flowers and a teddy bear. The other is a woman hitting her husband over the head with a rolling pin as he sits in a chair with a mug of beer. I knew I would find an answer among this group. Even a Google search didn't help originally. I did think about posting this in one of the language forums, but thought it would be rude to post my question in English. It was a dilemma, and sorry elemenoP, I forgot about the lounge. |

No problem, but it would be a better fit for the Lounge. I'll move us there now. Is everyone ready? Fasten your seat belts, here we go. |
