Baen has always run on a very small budget. It used to be that for years, one guy handled the entire Webscription portion of their business, from coding to tech support to updating the listngs, and when he became severely ill and had to retire, they had to scramble to find several people to replace him.

In any case, they may later fix things so that you can only add to cart if you have a code to redeem, or they may simply leave it in limbo.

I'm just going to say that the experiment alluded to above seems to have worked, for now, and for the bundles which I myself purchased, I am willing to let it go forward with the any remaining persons who originally signed up in the threads while they had some expectation that things would still work.

Anyone else after that, well, I did warn people for like what, 4 days straight, that the Monthly Bundles were going to shut down Real Soon Now and if they ignored that, too bad.

You did indeed. And if some of the people who woke up to this late don't get free books, I don't see that as a problem. Baen have already been more than generous with us, and I for one will continue to buy from them regularly. I feel that is the least I can do in return for their generosity (oh, yeah, and I am hooked now) They have good authors, decent proof reading, and a fair trade policy. What's not to like?

Their actual catalogue of stuff they actually publish and would get the most profit from sales-to-me of, unfortunately. Whoever picks their new release and backlist filler books and I, 90% of the time we just don't have even vaguely coinciding tastes...

But at least they're bringing out the classic-ish/other-author reprints and they're carrying other smaller publishers on nearly the same terms, so I do have some stuff to buy there occasionally and I'm not just giving them pity sales.

I quite agree.

Looking back over my account history I noticed that almost all of my purchases have been a sequel to one or more of the freebies from the BFL, the CDs or these chains. Or an author I'd learned of through them.

So I guess in my case at least Jim and Eric's marketing strategy was a success. Without those freebies I probably would never have Baen customer in the first place.

Although the monthly bundling thing isn't really working for me in terms of introducing new authors (just not fond of MilSF, so Baen proper is a decided minority grouping along my reads), it's been getting sales from me in other ways.

For the past half-dozen+ gifts, I've made a point of buying something else in their catalogue which I did want to try at the same time by way of thanks.
