For me Tablets are the perfect Solution for those who find ALL smartphone screens too small for light computing tasks
and a laptop a cumbersome
overkill for such tasks.

I use My kindle fire for many things Such as Email/web, grocery list app
Comic book reading.
fast access to my religious reference texts, showing my professional CG Illustration portfolio to potential clients ,
showing my animation Demo reel to potential clients,
Playing games like "shadowgun" and of course reading novels.
all on a touch screen device that fit sinto the thigh pocket of my "cargo pants" in the summer and the side pocket of my winter jackets(s)

On a more serious note, tablets do have a scary side. For one thing, they further integrate humans into a digital and sedentary life-style. why go out when you can browse? And also, as a form of digital media, they are are dumbed down. Android is easier to use than windows. All the lovely little apps and widgets require comparatively zilch digital understanding to use. So yeah ultimately I think they are a bad thing. Doesn't matter anyway. The world ends on the 21st with the end of the Mayan calander. Hell, I may as well go get a Samsung Tab 2 as I'm about to do die. Merry xmas.

And anyone that takes this too seriously needs to d/l Angry Birds and loosen up. Have a nice weekend.

Yes and laptops have become powerful enough to act as hardware replacements for desktop/tower PC's& Mac's for real production work
I use several professional CG /animation programs such as Adobe after effects and Maxon Cinema4D for my Visual effects work all on a Mac laptop

however with the possible exception of the ( ill conceived) MS surface devices
tablets are not marketed as actual production devices but more as consumption devices


You seem to have a larger problem with the consumer/entertainment based nature of western economies .

I have some concerns about this as well,particularly how it effects young people and encourages DEBT Slavery,

But fine go write a word press blog about it or post some ranting you tube videos.

Instead of coming here trying to create controversy and engage in battle with forum members through use of hyperbole and antagonism.

Tablets are good for some things.

Granddad was visiting his granddaughter and her family. They were sitting in the kitchen as granddaughter prepared a meal when granddad said: "Have you got a newspaper I could use?"

Granddaughter responded: "This is the twenty-first century granddad, we don't use newspapers any more, we have iPads. There is nothing that a newspaper can do that you can't do with an iPad. Here, you can borrow mine." She handed him her iPad.

I think the Asus tablets were, with their dockable keyboards and everything. They even come with a not-too-awful set of office software.
