Do pay attention to the details if you are considering the Abbyy Finereader. I bought the Express Ed., and while it does an amazing job (almost errorless OCR), it doesn't accept PDFs, it will convert to PDF, but won't start there.
So, is there an inexpensive way to convert a PDF to a format the Express will accept, or will I be ahead of the game to get the full version Abbyy...?

I've used Book Scan US with very satisfactory results -- pdf's that read well on my tablet, but getting from there to ePub is a learning curve....

The "Express Edition" is the cut-down version that's given away as a freebie with a lot of scanners. I was referring to the full product, which does indeed scan from PDF. You can buy older versions of the full product at a much lower price than the current version, and they're just as good for "normal" OCR.

Thanks, Harry. Version 10 is just about impossible to find and older than that doesn't list the Win 7 platform. However, just found a Version 11 Pro for under $100, so it's on order (CD, not download) but it will also work on my laptop (Win XP).
I'm looking forward to reading these on something other than a backlit screen
Also, thanks to Brian for the link - that's a very helpful thread.
