By air I am refering to transportation from the factory/factories in China. Once in the U.S. they can certainly travel via ground and/or air.

I think there's something special about the Kindles, as I'm usually able to buy from Amazon.co.uk. I tried ordering a Kindle from Amazon.de, just to see if it worked, but I got the same error there.

Thanks anyways, though!

I got that, but flying to my door would have been faster. Well they are on the ups truck out for delivery. So hopefully soon ...

They are shipping NOW! The website says 1 to two weeks, but I ordered Sunday night and mine's already shipped. Too late for second thoughts about the potential color issues. Will keep my fingers crossed. I don't mind a bit of shadows at the bottom or even a touch of color there, but if I have a blob in the middle of the screen I'm returning everything and getting the glowlight for $89 (maybe... Ok, probably not. I'll just return and wait for the 2nd gen PW to come out).

amazon.de does only ship kindles to Germany, I found this out when my trusty old Illiad gave up the ghost a few weeks ago. I live in Hungary, but i found a German freight forwarder, called Mailboxde.com who were kind enough to ship me two machines for 18 euros. Shipping to them from amazon.de was free so this was not a bad deal. They seem so ship to all of Europe.

^ This service sounds reasonable. I don't quite get why they can't just ship to wherever, as long as they get their money, especially since you already paid a premium for buying it in the German vs. US store.

Buying from Germany, will there be a smaller amount of books in other languages than German that I can buy? Or is it the same?

Maybe there's a similar service in the UK, otherwise! Seems great!

^No, where you shop for books is set up in you "Manage your Kindle" country settings on the amazon site, not where you buy the actual device.

The kicker is that English books are often cheaper in the .de store than the .com store, and vice versa, but you often have to know the exact title and search for it. The reason for it is that German books have fixed pricing if purchased by a customer in Germany, and, likewise, US publishers can set the price of their books in the US that does not necessarily apply to non US customers.

The flip side is that you will not have access to all US titles in the de store, but then again, if you read mostly in English, you would probably want to select a US address in your country settings.

It seems that if you order the machines as gifts they won't be tied to the amazon.de account, you can register them to any amazon account you want.

Hmm, you guys are saying two different things here.

Will my account be tied to the German store if I buy it from Germany? Can I change the account it's tied to?

Edit: It doesn't seem to matter, from the German store it wouldn't be shipped until 5-7 weeks from now anyways. Hopefully I'll have it from the Swedish reseller by then. They've implied that.

Thanks, anyways, though.

It doesn't matter where you buy it from. All that matters is which country you register it in.

I assume that it would be shipped earlier. With mine the initial date given was December 10 and it was shipped at the end of November. But of course that's not a guarantee and if you do have trouble with your unit, it'd probably be better to have bought it locally.

I think I'll wait. A few weeks ago, the reseller emailed me and said it could come in to them at any time, but that it would probably take "a few weeks". I emailed them back with some questions and they replied with that I was among the first to receive one when they got them, so (and I hope I'm not being naive when I believe them) I'll probably have this one about as fast as that German one would arrive. And as you said, it's most often easier to deal with companies domestically located than foreign ones.

I appreciate the help a lot, though, really.

Exactly.

Nible, what drago was referring to is the fact that if you order a Kindle online, it is already registered to you, but if you buy it as a gift, it is not registered to anyone. It really does not matter, though. All you do is enter your Amazon linked email address and password, when you first use it, and it will know which store you can purchase books from. The store that your account is linked to in your country settings on the Manage your Kindle page.

Where you buy it, again, does not matter.
