Sorry i don't understand Harry.. why should the firmware on different devices affect something as simple as a TOC? I upgraded my PW to the latest version last night, and for hers, I am not sure what firmware it has, I'll have to check. It is an old Kindle though but it's not a mobi version she's reading, it's the azw.
But since they were both bought from Amazon, on the same account and downloaded via wifi, I didn't think something as silly as a TOC would be out of sorts. Page numbers, I get because the PW is new, but the TOC is just strange. |

The publisher supplies both versions of the book to Amazon. When you download a book from Amazon, you get either the Mobi version of the book or the KF8 version, depending what device you download it to. So sending a book to a K3 doesn't necessarily get you exactly the same book as sending that same book to a PW. |

Thanks Harry, how painstaking. They are both amazon devices and not that far off from each other, yet to really miss something as simple as TOCs and page numbers is just ridiculous.

TOC and page numbers are a matter for the publisher. It's for the publisher to decide whether or not a particular book has them. Nothing to do with Amazon.

Did you not just tell me that it depended on the format of the book downloaded by the device? it is then up to the firmware to display that information, not the publisher.
I work in engineering and coincidentally I work with the Amazon cloud..they are restrictive and love to play god with their information. The publisher is obviously sending Amazon the correct information- page numbers and TOCs are present as exhibited by the fact it is displaying on a Kindle 3 3G and not displaying on the Kindle Paperwhite. You are saying it's because of the format of the book that the device is downloading, that is sent by the publisher. This doesn't make sense, why would the publisher send two different formats without basic information? I don't think that that a one year old Kindle 3G is downloading books from Amazon that has limited information , in any case it's a moot point. Because the OLDER device, ie my sisters' kindle is displaying page numbers AND TOC. The new PW isn't. This is all firmware related. Also not sure why on this forum people defend Amazon.. I keep forgetting, am I on an Amazon forum? |

OK thanks Harry, I just don't understand how they would miss something so basic out of a formatted e-book..publisher or Amazon, the result is the device doesn't display it, and Amazon should do something to fix it.. it is a very simple firmware fix..they just need to find where the info is stored.
My point is, even if the publisher doesn't send the info, then Amazon are selling the device and maintaining the firmware, it is up to them to display all the information or find a way to do it. I'm in a minority, I guess. I have a paperwhite with no screen problems, it is a cute little device but i am not happy with the user experience of it. |

The last two books I bought for my PW did not show page numbers, but after I connected to the store one time, they showed up. I thought it was weird, but it worked so it is worth a try.

^thanks gaindinsgirl I'll give it a go. I'm just so dissappointed in the device for holding back something so stupid as page numbers and TOCs i've gone back to my first gen Nook. A total waste of money..

Are you saying that none of your books have a TOC on the Paperwhite?

yes that's exactly what I'm saying. i have three books on there, all bought from the Amazon store and all downloaded via the cloud. They all display a TOC and page numbers on my sisters 3G KINDLE (3rd or 4th Gen kindle, not sure as i realized she just got another one last year); and not on mine.
Same account. |

[QUOTE=Nicky_oz;2295408]I've searched for hours on this. The best I can find is that some books do and some don't, and you have to tap the menu on top to find the page number. If your book has it?
is it really this primitive? when it has something as useless as a location which is only good for other Kindles, and time to read and whatever other rubbish.. why take away page numbers. Kindle Voyage Simple, go into the book you want to read Click at the top of the page to open the controls Then click on the three horizontal lines on the far right. Then click on the "Reading Progress" button. Then choose what information you want displayed. Also worked in a very old Kindle I still have. Ampers. |
