The 5.0.0 main images from here:

And I followed these instructions so no fastboot needed for the kernel:
http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/README.txt

I kept both images as .gz and did the zcat piped to dd for both of them, as shown in that README. This "no fastboot" method also works for the K4. It is just the reverse of what the "getkernels" script does.

After flashing from 5.1.2 with extras, to plain 5.0.0 (both from ixtab.tk), my K5 went from no 3G providers found on ;311, to 3G working fine.

I just did a ;311 search now. It found the "normal" three local providers (One of the is 3G, and the other two are 2G). I am using "Switch automatically (recommended)", and it works for me. Try that.

EDIT: I just manually selected "T-Mobile 2G", and it is NOT connecting, so the choice of provider really does matter... I set it back to "automatic" and it works again. Try a different provider, or better, select "automatic".

Yes, the default ;311 selection of "automatic" works better than manually choosing a different provider that does not work.

Hmm... 3G was working on 5.0.0, then after installing amazon 5.1.0 and 5.1.2 updates, 3G is not working. But ;311 does see my local 3G providers (unlike the 5.2.1+extras, that saw no 3G providers)....

UPDATE: Okay, 3G finally connected AFTER opening the kindle store (shopping cart icon). So, if no 3G icon, try the shopping cart (with wireless ON, obviously)...

I found out why ixtab's 5.0.0 firmware works with 3G, while his 5.1.2 with extras does NOT work with 3G. Details here:
