It worked yay! So happy. Thank you so much for your suggestions, joehunt! I hope it works for Gary and Becca with no issues too!

My personal doc tag is [PDOC]

So anyway, got the covers working. Which is great. But now I feel an urgent need to reset the books all to EBOK rather than PDOC, as you do. Except it no longer works! Or rather, I got it to work on one book and none others since. I'm converting MOBI to MOBI, setting personal documents setting to EBOK or even blank, exporting it by email, by Send To Kindle, via Calibre...with no luck (except that I now get the covers). I've also tried downloading and using MobiMetaEditor, which was posted elsewhere on the site, for tinkering directly with each document settings. Anyone got any ideas on that?

I DID IT. IT WORKS. (maniacal laughter). I got the cover WITHOUT the personal tag on the PW.

After doing some googling and finding this had worked for others: I first saved mobi files with sharing enabled. I then used the MobiMetaEditor software mentioned elsewhere here to enter the generated new file and replace the ISBN inside the file with - and this is the important bit - the ASIN taken from the Amazon page of a particular ebook (it always starts with B).

Saving this generated a new .mobi file. I changed its name to be identical to the original - the one generated by Calibre. I then downloaded it to the PW via the experimental browser, having enabled the Content Server under the Connect/Share icon on Calibre's toolbar.

And there it was. Pristine and glorious, with its cover and no 'personal' tag.

However! Doing this for the hundred plus other non-Amazon ebooks I have would be a very great deal of work. Is there a way to quickly search for an ASIN for a whole bunch of ebooks in Calibre, and put that in the ID section of the metadata editor (assuming that's the right place for it) automatically?

You're doing way too much work for no good reason.

See this thread and this one for all the details you've ever wanted to know on the different choices you have to get working cover thumbnails without going crazy.

For people re-doing an existing on-device library, keep in mind that there may be some caching issues involved too. Better delete the 'broken' stuff, then let the Kindle notice (meaning, if you delete via USB: eject & unplug after the deletions, but *before* sending the 'fixed' files) before sending 'new' files.

Glad you got it working, gary, I'm very happy for you. However, I agree with Niluje, you don't need to do all that work. I basically upgraded my calibre as joehunt mentioned and I didn't need to do any of the other things you mentioned. I left the tag part blank, my mobi file is set to both, enable sharing is unchecked. That's it.

All of this is saved in my preferences for all new books added so I don't have to do it each time. For my existing library, I just highlighted them all and did a batch convert which took maybe 20 minutes for 600 books. (my computer is pretty fast)

Except, you see, that it doesn't work for me. I've tried all that, with zero success. It may be there's something else that's causing the problem. For all I know, being on a mac rather than a PC might make a difference: I have no idea. But the only way I've been able to get any success at all is following the complex steps I detailed above. If there were an easier way to do it, believe me, I'd be doing it.

Oh I see. I don't use a mac, so maybe it's that then. Glad you got it sorted either way.

I just had the same problems on the paperwhite..my version of calibre was too old.. by updating calibre.. deleting the books, then resending the books, I got the thumbnail cover pictures showing.. I used the AZW3 format when I converted the books..

following on ...from my last post......the personal bar has now shown up...
so I reconverted the old mobi docs with the "doc" option erased.. that removed the bar... and I then converted the format to azw3.. resent to the reader, the covers are now fine

don't know why I keep using azw3 when mobi is supposed to work... I guess I am just playing with the new toy .... lol
