Strange. On mine, only the name fields get red asterixed when I try to leave them out (maybe it's different if you'd already filled them in and then try to delete?).

Is it because of the requirement that kids under 13 can't be online on their own maybe? If not, it's just for marketing, since books don't have age ratings like video games or movies.

Websites require your birthday when you join? Welcome to the Internet guys. I'm pretty sure nobody gives a dsmn what you put as your date of birth. GAMETRAILERS. COM asks me every time I go to that sites which bugs the hell out of me so I try to make myself around 106 years old.

Possibly. Which is, of course, a joke. "Let me setup a fake parental email address so I can grant myself parental permission."

After entering my birthdate when this all came about, I received a birthday coupon code for 20% off: "save20bday" valid until my birthday, which is a week away. I have no idea if it is account specific. So they aren't asking for nefarious reasons, but instead want to help you celebrate.

I heard they were asking for the birth date so they could implement a grouchy old fart tax and charge them more for their ebooks because they know that even with an automated system they're likely to be a crotchety pain in the ass to deal with as long as they retain strength enough to complain!
I'm just saying, that's what I heard... |
