Well I've had my Glo since today only so it's too early to know how I will be using the light feature. But I can tell you I love it and I will turn it off during the day (why waste battery power when it's full daylight ?) and will use it at second or third grade from left to right (which is less than a third of total power)

I also find myself using the light in dim conditions, with a low brigthness setting. It just helps the whole reading experience as the contrast between text and background screen insn't that good on an e-ink screen with their greyish background when you're in dim light conditions.
Count me in for requesting an even lower brightness level for reading in total darkness. This shouldn't be too difficult for Kobo to provide in a firmware update. |

I'm noticing that so far having the light on does not seem to drain/have any effect on battery usage.

so, how do you compare eye strain level with kobo glo and lights on during night reading with tablet? is it the same reading on tablet at night, or is it less eye strain reading on kobo glo? without any first hand experience, it looks the same for me, but i'd like to hear your impressions...

Reflected light (as on the Kobo) seems more comfortable than direct light (as on tablets).

This is my understanding of it:
Reflected light is just what it sounds like, the light is reflected onto the page, similar to a booklight, but at a much closer distance. Backlight, on the other hand, has a light source shining through the screen from behind it, hence the light shining directly at your eyes, causing much more strain. The Kobo Glo (or the Kindle Paperwhite or the Nook Glowlight) is not backlit. Last edited by kobokobe; 10-23-2012 at 12:10 PM. |

I'm no optometrist but I think the light reflected off the page from such close distance does cause some strain, although I'm never really been bothered by it (But then again, I haven't as yet read for an extended period of time in complete darkness on the Glo). At the very least, it is much easier on the eyes compared to reading off a backlit device (tablet, phone, laptop, etc)

What causes eye strain for one person, may not for another. What is too bright for one, may be just right for someone else. Our vision can be very different from one person to another! I could say to you that I have eye strain but that could be because I am more sensitive to bright light/sunlight than the average person, or vice versa.... I agree that in general, it is accepted that a backlit device causes more eye strain than front lit. But that does not mean that some persons won't have eye strain on a front lit device or that everyone who reads in the dark on a tablet will have it. Last edited by Cdesja5; 10-23-2012 at 01:24 PM. |
