Palm T|X. One of my main uses of it was for ebook reading. Since I got my Sony Reader, it seems much less use.

like this thread. I use several Palms I have picked up over time from second hand stores, six to twenty bucks each. My prized Sony PRS-505 screen broke in my luggage coming home from vacation. Arrg. So I went back to Palm and realize it may be all I need. Here's why:
Generally--Default Palm font isn't very good, but with freeware hacks you can fix this easy. It takes about a half hour at the freeware sites to figure out what to download to hack the font, with lots of choices and sizes. Hacks are different between OS4 and OS5. The later Palms had high-resolution screens 320 by 320 (or even more for the TX and T3), much better than Pocket PCs. Mobipocket is great. It converts non-drm formatted stuff to the Palm format well. And you can use Calibre to convert something that Mobipocket can't convert natively. Mobi's enews program for rss feeds is up there with Calibre's. Plus games and a backlit touchscreen. The OS5 Palms have variable backlights. Mobipocket can be set to sync to an SD card in the Palm. 1 gig card limit for most Palms but as you all know, a gig holds plenty of books. Putting books on the device requires hotsync. I use an old XP machine. Don't know if Vista or W7 hotsync to the old devices? 1. Sony PEG-SJ20 (six bucks with cradle). Highest resolution black and white Palm made, I think. Battery lasts longer because it's BW. A blogger ran a test of this against its color equivalent and he said it made it 8 hours instead of 2. So dock it at night and the eink battery advantage is no big deal. Nice scroll wheel to change pages. Instant page turns. Bright screen. 2. Tungsten C. Has wifi and a keyboard. Can be hacked to run an early version of Opera Mini. Good for RSS feeds in Opera. 3. Tungsten T3. Best of the bunch. Nice cover flap. Slides open to a big screen. Touch screen option to turn pages in Mobipocket. Bluetooth to sync if you want. Battery is only about two hours though since it is old. Honestly I wasn't using the PRS-505 late at night or on the bus because it had no backlight, now I read more. I don't get the eyestrain issue with the Palms that I do reading from a computer screen. |

BlackBerry 8820
It's a corporate device that connects with MS Office. A pretty good PDA in general, but frankly, I liked my personal device much better (a Treo700p, which unfortunately I can't make work with my Vista 64 PC). Reading anything, even a short message, on the Blackberry is extremely difficult for me. The fonts just plain suck; but reading on the Treo, or any older Palm device was a reasonably comfortable experience for me (even the Palm 100).
I also liked how there were many many free or very cheap apps available for Palm OS4 and earlier. The available apps for this BB are about as lame as the built-in ones and they cost a fortune. The big dogs at my company have been smitten with Apple devices lately. (All the execs got an iPad). I suspect that as our contracts expire, we will be going to iPhone. That won't be too bad I guess but I think AT&T service isn't nearly as reliable as Verizon and we are a company that relies more and more on our ability to communicate with each other. I'd probably prefer Verizon and Android over AT&T and iPhone. |

I just use my simple LG Rumor II phone. Even basic cell phones these day have enough functionality to replace calendars and planners. IMO, a QWERTY keyboard is better than a touch screen for a PDA.

HTC Touch Pro 2. I've always been partial to Windows device, from way back in the Hand-Held PC days. It's a nice phone, and it has all the PDA functions I remember. Being able to use the same Word files on my desktop and phone is very convenient.

I still use my little PalmIIIx for a lightweight lists, calendar, and memo keeper.
Adore my Psion 5, but haven"t played with it since I moved to vista. I'm thinking about putting some ebooks on it with a cf card though. |

I still have a Palm TX, and I still use it. When I bought it three years ago I talked the Staples store manager into a $50 discount so I paid under $250. Oddly, this is one of the only tech gadgets I ever saw go up in price -- eventually it was selling for $325 or more. It's real selling points are WiFi and Bluetooth. I can link to a WiFi network and use a small portable keyboard to do anything anyone can do on the Web. I also still keep all my personal contacts on it, and they're backed up on an SDHC card. I can travel without a laptop since I have this.
I also have an older Tungsten E that does throne room duty. It's battery is shot, so a charge is good for only an hour or so. The battery is quite troublesome to replace, and since it has no connection capabilities (other than "beaming") it hasn't much value. Not sure why anyone would ask this question, but that's my answer, at least today. |

I use a HTC HD2 for personal stuff and a HTC Diamond as a work phone and diary - unfortunately my current employer does not let us have a data plan so syncing is via cable only.
