Battery strategy-505

I have the Sony 505 Reader. So far Shut Down Disabled, I get 16 to 18 days of battery life whether I read from it or not in the last 2 cycles down to one bar on the battery icon.

I am now running a cycle with Shut Down Enabled. You can access that option in the Settings on the Main Menu.

No. With an SD card in, I lose a bar a day, whether I use it (or there's anything on it) or not.

I don't know why though, I have an SD card in my digital camera all the time, and its battery lasts for months.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the Reader being in standby & not truly off? I'm not sure really, just a thought, I've only got 175 books on mine at the moment so haven't needed a card yet.

Probably, though I've read that my camera (Nikon D80) operates the same way (going into standby instead of truly being off).

Either way, wading through the menus to shut it down, and then waiting through the long boot up process to turn it on every time I use it is not something I'm willing to do (and obviously wasn't the way Sony intended the Reader to be used).

Been having the same issue with my 505. I've had it for a month, and seem to have to charge it nearly once a week, even when not used. This is definitely not a problem I had using the 500.

I'm going to try the memory stick approach - had been using a 2GIG SD card. Will let you know if it works.

Just an update...

Recharged my 505 Sunday night after removing the SD card, let it sit for a day, then read for an hour off of a 32Meg Memory Stick today at lunch.

No power drop at all. Makes me think it was the SD card causing the problem.

I still haven't tried using a memory stick instead of an SD card. I'm getting about 1200 page turns per power bar right now w/o the SD card installed. I don't know how many hours that is. I was getting about 300 page turns with the SD card.

Do you know the manufacturer of your memory stick?

It's a Sony Memory Stick - is the 32Meg one that came with my PSP. Glad I finally found a use for it (it had sat in the box for two years).

Just checked my reader again - still no power drop, and I've had the memory stick in there for two days now.

With Shutdown Enabled it only takes 30 seconds to boot up. It also takes about 30 seconds to shut it down as well. Thus, in my opinion, unless you are reading with it hourly it pays to use that option.

I disagree. And, it's clearly not how Sony intended it to be used.

Anyway, to me it feels like boot up takes a couple minutes, so I was going to time it. But, when I tried to shut it off it froze (been stuck at "Shutting Down..." with a stop sign exclamation warning in the middle of the screen for five minutes now). Hard resets don't work. Guess I just have to wait for the battery to run out

I can't find it at the moment, but I recall seeing something in another thead about the reset only working if the device is switched on, and it not being easy to see if it's on or not (as the display doesn't change when off!) Maybe try double-checking the resets after sliding the power switch?

The Reader isn't ever really "off" (unless you use the "full off" option on the 505), so the reset will work with it in Sleep Mode just as well as when it's fully "on." But what you're saying about it being tough to tell if the reset has taken is right on. The only way I know of to tell that is to exercise the power switch and see if it boots.

I don't think anything will work -- the device appears bricked. It's been stuck at "shutting down..." for many hours now.
